My story, including 1 month post-op

Recommended Posts

I awoke on the morning of Jan. 20th, 2017, unaware that my life was about to change, dramatically!

There was nothing particularly special happening that day, as my life had obtained a comfortable level of routine, broken regularly by assorted family "emergencies".

On this most auspicious of dates, I was a 38 year old homemaker. Wife to an Army man, mother to 3 pre/teens. I didn't particularly relish staying at home, but felt the family schedule would strain under my employment.

I awoke with a sudden, unbeckoned thought. "Sarah, you need weight loss surgery!" From whence the idea hailed, I have no idea. I didn't know anyone that had undergone the procedure. I had not watched any television programming or movies that featured the surgery. I had not even thought about it for 20 years, a time in which it was extremely dangerous.

The idea was so powerful in my mind, that I immediately began researching the options. I came across Bariatric Pal's website and joined.

The rest, as they say, is history. I had my VSG in Mexico by Dr. Illan, 2 months to the day when I awoke with that voice in my head.

Tomorrow will be my 1 month surgiversary. So far, I have had a very easy recovery with virtually no pain. I didn't even have gas pain! (Touch wood).

Starting weight: 305lbs.

Surgery weight: 290lbs.

Current weight: 270lbs.

Insurance: Yes, I have insurance that would cover the surgery, and I would even have gone to Johns Hopkins. But I didn't feel that was my path.

I am a firm believer that God has given us this tool this day and age and He talks to us in different ways.

Awesome story hon! Blessings on your journey!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
