Eating soft foods before supposed to

Recommended Posts

So I guess I'm not technically eating soft foods before I'm supposed to because my doctor told me to baby my stomach and if I felt like I was comfrotable to move from pureed foods to soft foods then no one knows my body better than me. I chew it up really good to where its almost like a pureed consistancy in my mouth and then slowly swollow small pieces. It hasnt been hurting my stomach but sometimes I feel it going down and it feels really weird, sometimes my chest starts hurting but it goes away and occasionally I'll start burping immediently afterwards, but I'm proud of myself. I got some turkey pinwheels from Walmart and took the tortilla part out so now its just meat, a lil cheese and whatever sauce they use, it took me 5 hours but I finally ate all 6 pinwheels.

Anyone else relate? Any advice for me?

How far out are you and did you have the sleeve? Sometimes I get confused on this forum bc people post in the wrong area. I am 1 week out from the sleeve surgery. I have been tolerating fluids and Protein Shakes fine. It is hard to get them all in though. I do feel like I could eat real food. I am not hungry, but just feel like I need to put something other than liquid in my body. I don't know if that is normal or not at this point. Honestly at this point I don't even feel as if I had surgery other than being able to see my incisions and knowing I need to only drink liquids. I even went to an amusement park Sunday and walked around all day with no problems. I drove myself to the store yesterday and went shopping. I have cleaned my house numerous times and even cut grass outside with the push mower (it's super light). I am not worried bc I do not hurt at all. I stopped pain meds on day 2 and gas medicine on day 4. I had 2 bowel movements already even with just the liquid phase. I'm starting to wonder if I am abnormal lol and I don't feel like I have lost any weight which is depressing. I refuse to buy a scale though so I am judging by my clothes and my looks. I sometimes wonder how people say they lost 10 to 20 pounds the first week. Just sitting over here bored and wondering if I should have chose bypass instead.

I did have the sleeve on March 24th, so I'll be 3 weeks out on Friday. I was able to start my pureed stage after a week and it went smoothly. When I went to my post op appointment the doctor said to trust my body and if I felt comfortable moving to softer foods like moist meats, eggs, etc then I should go for it. The only discomfort I've felt is in my chest and then I feel it go down my stomach but its not bad just weird. I lost 17 pounds and I have a hard time with my Protein intake, so with me being able to eat some soft meats, that helps me a little.

I'm confused were you eating for the entire time taking breaks. I'm suppose to space my meals 3hrs apart and not drink 30 mins prior or after. I would use caution you don't want food stuck.

There were 6 pinwheels. I was able to eat 2 within the first hour, it took me literally the whole hour just to chew them up really well and swallow them. After I was done with the first 2, I did wait 30-45 minutes and I was able to get liquids in, and then I waited a little while longer and tried again because I needed the Protein and the shakes don't sit well with me as well as they did pre op. Im

not sure if I'm doing it right or not because I wasn't really given guidelines on how to eat, just how much protein I need to be getting a day.

My MD & nutritionist said to aim for three eating moments a day, plus a snack if I wanted one, once I moved onto pureed foods.

I am also supposed to limit meals to 30 minutes to prevent grazing. Finally, I am supposed to stop drinking any liquid 30 minutes prior to eating, not eat & drink at the same time, and wait another 30 minutes until I finish eating before I start drinking my fluids again. Hope this helps!

I am having a mirror of your experience I have been doing so good I have to stop and ask myself did I even have surgery lol. I did buy a scale and I was happy to see 20 pounds gone since surgery 4/18 it may benefit you to buy a scale because that mental war could get intense. Wishing you so much luck and love on your journey xo

I, too, did really great post-op. I was up and walking immediately and even sent home from the hospital early. Now starting my 9th week out. I have had a couple stalls that last about a week, but it does keep coming down. I, too, cannot tolerate the milk whey Protein Shakes after surgery (went fine before). I have found a Bone Broth Protein that seems to work better and Mix this with almond milk rather than real milk. It doesn't give me the milk nutrition, but at least I'm getting protein. I, too, FELT like I could eat soft foods sooner than I was supposed to, but was warned not to start too soon because of leaking in the stomach. I waited-that scared me! Once on soft foods, I ate canned chicken, tuna, eggs. First week I didn't lose much, in fact gained at surgery because of all the fluids pumped into me. In the full 8 weeks, I've been losing about 2/week. It is slow, but I figure slow will stay off!hope, hope. Now when eating more normal foods, I sometimes get TOO full. Then I have this constant burning feeling for about 10 minutes. It passes, then I'm fine. I am doing a Water aerobics class daily and try to walk daily 1-3 miles. After about the 4th week, I didn't feel any soreness from the incision, so I could do anything I'd done before and more.

This has been an interesting journey and I'm glad I took this route.

I am a month post op and am on soft foods.

What seems to be the case for me is I can eat up to 15g of Protein at a sitting. My protein goal is 70g for the day. 5 sittings brings me up to 75g, IF I get 15g at each one. I don't. Some sittings are only 8g. So, I need to eat 6 times a day.

Before noon I might get one solid meal, but mostly it is just milk, coffee, Vitamins, and Fiber (26g protein).

After noon I usually have a can of tuna, an egg, cottage cheese, and yogurt. Takes until bedtime to get everything in.

Hi,

Could you tell me what kind of Bone Broth protein you are using?

We buy bone broth from Greenmarket & sometimes make it ourselves but is there another product with extra Proteins?

Many thanks!

Yes. I found a powder bone broth protein mix at my local co-op food store. It is Ancient Nutrition manufactured in North Palm Beach, FL One scoop is 20 grams protein, 98 cal. My stomach and digestive system seems to tolerate this much better than a milk whey protein. My NUT thought this would be a better choice than vegetable protein.

Thank you! This is so helpful, I am not loving the chalkiness of my Protein Shakes, even the unflavored ones, and I can't tolerate sweetness of the artificial flavors. I will look right now - thanks again!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
