Greetings!!!

I am in my soft food stage and I would like to know if we can have smart one dinners. The ones with chicken and turkey, gravy and mash potatoes. I would really like to get some but I want to make sure that it is considered a soft food option.

Also, does any one have any recipes other than eggs, tuna and Beans?

Thank you very much.

The turkey/chicken might not be soft enough for the soft food stage.

I know I was told that really fall-apart tender, moist chicken/fish would be okay.

Also, just a heads-up on the Smart Ones.... they may claim to be healthy, but Smart Ones, Healthy Choice, Weight Watchers, etc frozen meals are usually very high in carbs. Remember you want to get your Protein first and I imagine that gravy with the chicken/turkey is loaded with carbs and so are the potatoes.

If you are on Pinterest, there are a TON of recipes that look great for every stage of the way. I am pre op, and have been collecting recipes for after surgery

Cook your own real food.

Those smart ones are trash. Do not eat them, especially not early on, and mashed potatoes and gravy is a bad post op option.

The nutrition value is bad. 22 carbs and 20 Protein. You never want to eat anything where the carbs are more than the protein, if you have to eat carbs, the protein should out do the carbs 2 to 1 or 3 to 1.

If the carbs on this was like 5 or 8 and the protein was 20 then it would be an okay choice.

It's going to vary from Dr to Dr. Mine said no meats unless I've put them through a blender for soft foods stage.

Having had Smart Ones, I'd advise against. The meat is pretty tough.

Google Eggface for lots of things you can eat. She's a great resource.

If you're in a situation where you can't cook for yourself (it happens), it seems that canned chicken, canned tuna, and canned corned beef hash are the more common choices at that stage (especially turned into a "salad" version with yogurt or mayo, etc.)

Thank you for the information. I ended up just getting some Soups from panera bread.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
