You will check into the hospital and go under anesthesia. The doctor directs a "scope" with a camera at the end down your throat into your esophagus and it allows him to view your stomache. He checks for ulcers, polyps...basically checks the condition of your stomache going into surgery. As my surgeon puts it, "wants to make sure he is not taking out the good part of your stomache if there are any issues. The main thing the surgeon checks for is the h. pylori bacteria which is a pain to have as they will have to put you on antibiotics to kill it before proceeding with your surgery. They do a biopsy for that while in your tummy and then when they are done, you wake up and usually are cleared to go home within the hour. The whole process takes maybe about 4 hours. Hope that helps you. Aloha[emoji2]

FYI, most places don't put you under general anesthesia for an EGD. Mine was done under conscious sedation, so I was groggy but totally awake the whole time. They sprayed this nasty numbing spray in the back of my throat that tasted like gasoline so I wouldn't feel anything. I remember a little pressure, but that's all. As was said in the above post, I was in and out in about 4 hours. I felt fine afterwards, but I was not allowed to drive and couldn't go back to work either. I went home, took a nap, and when I woke up my throat was a little sore, but that's it.

I was so worried about mine but it was the easiest thing. When I got there, they put in an IV and I waited for a bit. For the actual procedure, I was under anesthesia (not general), but I was completely out of it with 0 recollection. I woke up being wheeled back into my room where I had to wait 30 minutes for them to monitor me post-anesthesia. My throat was slightly sore for a couple of days due to biopsy but we went out to brunch right from the procedure so it wasn't bad at all.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
