My biggest fears and the unknown

Recommended Posts

Hello all!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have a few fears and concerns that you can help me with. I am almost positive about getting the band and have attended a consultation last week. If you can answer some of my questions and concerns it would be great. I just don't know of anyone whom was banded and would like to hear the answers first hand from someone who has the band.

What is your social life like and how did it change with your band?

Are you able to drink...I have an Irish wife. I know beer is out...but wine..some mixed drinks. I think you can have when banded. I know...empty calories. But you have to live also...right.

PB's and feeling sick.....what is the deal. I hate getting sick and do have a fear of getting sick. (phobia)

Would I ever be able to enjoy myself without the fear of having a band? I don't want to overeat, but would like to go to a BBQ and have some choices. (clams, corn, Burger, Tomato salad) I know the mentioned things might not be feasable, but are they?

Many people describe the band either as the best experience they have had, or the worst. I know that if you don't follow the rules you get sick.....cut and dry.

My main concern is the....will life be some what normal. Eat less...think smart about what I eat. Get rid of the hunger that makes me overeat.

Can you help me answer some of these concerns please?

Thanks,

Mike (Fish)

The band is a very good choice for someone who is a

'volume eater".....after you have a few fills and get good restrictions you just can't eat much at one time. But the really wonderful thing......the thing I didn't expect.....is that you just don't care!!! After only a short while you will lose your intest in food. You will have to learn to eat all over again........most volume eaters also eat fast and with...er, 'gusto.' That's gotta go....you must learn to eat very small bites, chew everything to almost pulverize it and eat slowly. You can't drink anything with your meals or for one hour afterward (liquids wash the food out of your pouch and you get hungry again too soon.) You must eat your Protein first at each meal....then if you have room left in that little pouch, you can have some green vegetables/salad.

The PB's happen when you eat too fast, don't chew well enough, or try to pack that little pouch too full (then it backs up into your esophagus and you will be sorry you did that!). It takes a while to master the art of eating but it gets better sa the months go by.

You don't say how much you need to lose but men generally lose much faster than women. If you will eliminate most white (starchy) carbs from your diet you will lose faster than you will otherwise.....that also helps quell the cravings and keeps your blood sugar stable and on an even keel.

You can cheat with the band....it takes some personal responsibility and committment to your new lifestyle and your weight loss journey. Things like ice cream, potatoes, etc (soft foods) can slide right down and out...and it's tempting to eat them with other foods don't want to cooperate. That's when people fall into the 'soft food syndrome' and that's also when they quit losing or start gaining and start saying "the band didn't work for me....poor me." Again, it's committment to yourself.

Social life? Well, now that I have lost 160 pounds I have one. :clap2:I can fit in chairs, and wear pretty clothes, and sit comfotably and visit with people, I can walk thru the streets/malls with friends....I now have a life.

However, Mike, if your entire social life is centered on drinking and eating, you may have to broaden your circle of friends. But you can still go out to eat....I can eat a small rare steak, a salad with deli meat/cheese/etc. or a nice Soup (no bread, no crackers) - not all at the same meal, of course! No potatoes for me, thanks (unless they have sweet potatoes/yam....they are good for you).I usually just order soup then eat a couple bits of DH's steak and salad....then I'm full. Hard to imagine, isn't it. "To go" boxes are your friend....however, leftover meat usually doesn't go down nearly as well as freshly cooked for some reason.

Not everyone's experience is the same, but this is a brief overview of my wls experience. I'm off all diabetes, blood pessure, gout, etc meds. Life is good again!!:whoo:

Thanks for the response. I am currently 300lbs and 5' 10". The doc says he would like to see me drop 100lbs. I have a few health problems as a result of being overweight. Fatty Liver, high BP, Cholesterol is also high, and I am only 37. Not good at all. I know that my lifestyle now is not the right way to live. I am a volume eater...no doubt. I can eat a 16 oz. steak in a snap. That has to change if I want to see my daughter get married. My wife and I just had a baby girl whom is only three months old. Don't get me wrong....I like my food, and probably will always. It is the amount and how I eat. The band will be a tool to help me. I need a good swift kick in the rear. As for my social life, I like to go out with friends and enjoy a good bottle of wine. Eat some dinner and relax. I know I do not have to eat like a football team in order to do that. I can also handle not drinking during a meal. (so I think) I guess it is something I would have to get used to.

I want my health to turn around and to have a new lease on life. Life now is surrounded around food. What am I going to eat. Diet...eat...diet..eat.....up a pant size....eat....diet..eat You get the point. It is time for a change.

Thanks for your response. I wish you all the best with your loss and your new lease on life. It is great to hear all of the people who make the choice for LIFE. It also is a tremendous step not having the meds....that is GREAT!

I totally agree with everything Gail said. I am only 4 months out so she has much more experience than I do but one thing that she said I did not expect to happen.....you do lose interest in food, not completely but it is not the center of your world anymore.

When I would diet before, I felt deprived but now I can go out to eat, have half of my meal and be quite happy. I never feel sad about not eating everything in sight and then some. You will go to the BBQ and sample things, just not go overboard and like I said not feel deprived (or stuffed) when its over.

Good Luck......your daughter is worth it! That is why I got the band.

When you go to a BBQ instead of having 2 servings of every bloody thing available you'll eat a couple of bites of each item. There will be foods that you can't eat, for me it's anything with a flour/yeast combo such as bread, sweet rolls, etc. I can't eat peas, overcooked meat, and a few other things but mostly I can't eat the foods that got me fat to begin with.

I think you really have to sit down and look at what you honestly and sincerely want more, do you want quantity of food or thin and healthy.

It's true, you do lose your interest and obsession with food. There is an emotional roller coaster that leads up to that but it happens. I don't care how many people told me that pre-banded, I would have never believed it. But I totally agree with the others, it happens. You lose the desire and obsession for huge quantities of food.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
