Congestive heart failure and gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

I have a failing a failing heart valve, and very early CHF that was reversed with gastric bypass. But every case is different. If you have CHF the bariatric surgeon will refer you to a cardiologist for an evaluation of your heart health before deciding to do surgery. Everyone felt my case would benefit from the weight loss. Extreme weightloss can be stressful on the heart so it's not something to take lightly.

I wish you all the best then. I was able to come off the lasix about 2 weeks preop. I'm 2 years postop and have maintained good heart health since. It was past time for me to lose the weight and get healthy.

I'm told a lot of people with type 2 go into remission postop. Make sure you work with the NUT and dietician so you manage your sugars postop so you don't crash. I became hypoglycemic postop and have to eat some sugar to make sure I don't have crashes. My morning sugar avgs around 60. Doesn't surprise me, before I gained weight I was hypoglycemic, then had kids and gained over 100lbs, fixed the hypoglycemia, but messed up everything else lol.

I was borderline gestational diabetic on my youngest child but it was mostly from my weight.

My story is a little different. I had my by pass on 2/21/17, went home on 2/24. That night was horrible. I left the hospital vomiting and sick, BIG mistake! I was unable to take any pain, nausea, or Maint meds. I could barely move or even suck on ice. That night I began hallucinating and having breathing difficulties even though I was sent home on O2. I was readmitted 2/25 with chf, dehydration, & uncontrolled pain. Discharged on 2/28. All that time, I cont to tell them my pain was off the charts and 1 of 5 of my incisions was getting redder and harder. Discharged anyway. Follow up with pcp on 3/2. Breathing was very labored & required O2. I was sent for Ct scan to rule out blood clot. That morning my "bad" incision had begun to ooze. 4X4's covering it. By the time we finished Ct, my drainage had soaked through 3 towels! I was sent back to the hospital. Admitted the 3rd time in just over a wk. Incision was reopened and drained of more than a quart of nasty infection. I was discharged 3/4. 3/7 will mark my 2wk post op. I was sent home with incision open with packing that has to be changed daily and dressing change twice daily. This is the first time I don't feel like I'm heading back to the hospital or feel like I am dying. This is NOT typical, but everyone should pay attention to the little things because they can turn into BIG things fast!

You are correct. And I always watch for those too. Surprisingly, I came from surgery feeling better than I had in years. Once I was on my feet I didn't stop for weeks after lol. The 1st week home I walked 7 miles. Just doing stuff like Sam's, Kroger, Walmart, etc. I felt that good. My results were not typical. And the surgeon fussed saying I was supposed to be resting. I said I wasn't washing dishes, changing the cat litter, or doing laundry, mopping floors...so I was resting, he gave up lol. Most people don't recover like me. I try to rest up at the hospital, cuz it never exists at home between needy cats and a husband. And I'm the disabled one!

My father is one of those success stories. He had RNY about 5 years ago. He had type 2 diabetes (and was taking tons of insulin via a pump), high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc. Today he takes NO medication! All of his comorbidities are GONE. Not saying this happens to everyone but I have personally seen it happen.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
