Will I Ever Eat Spicy Again?

Recommended Posts

I'm 11 weeks post gastric sleeve, I'm 46 pounds down and loving life, however, I'm grieving the loss of spice in my life. My stomach can no longer handle anything remotely spicy.
I immediately, after 1 bite, feel sick like I am going to throw up.
I know it may seem silly to some, but I have always eaten spicy even as a child.
Cajun, Indian, Thai, Chinese, Mexican...all ordered 5 stars spicy and now I can't even handle cooked down onions.
No more Sichuan pepper oil, Habanero peppers or Bird-eye chilis!
Someone please tell me my love of spice isn't lost forever!

Yes you will. Just give it time. I love hot and spicy food too. Try some every now and then and see how your stomach takes it. I was overjoyed the first time I ate jalapenos and didn't get sick.

Hi, I'm almost 16 weeks post op and I have loved spicy foods for my entire life too.... until now. I still love the taste, but can't tolerate onions, jalapenos or Sriracha anymore. I used to go through a bottle of Sriracha in a matter of a couple weeks.

Every now and then I will try a little Sriracha to see if I am able to handle it.... but not yet. I really hope that I will be able to enjoy spicy food again someday.

I know that it took a little while, but I have no issue with anything spicy nowadays. I did have to chuckle in the beginning when something as tame as mango habenero sauce would cause me distress. I would say by the end of the first year, I was back to normal in this regard.

I'm able to tolerate some spicy things, I'm also on a ppi so that may have something to do with it. I can do red and green chile BUT can't be too hot yet, siracha is a hit or miss sometimes my tummy likes it sometimes it's like hell no. I've also had some Louisiana hot sauce which is also a hit or miss. Haven't tried anything else yet. I'm about 6 weeks post op.

Yeah my spice toleration depends on what it is and how spicy it is. I made breading-free jalapeno poppers about a month ago and regretted that after eating 2-3 of them (they were halved). I can have other things, other peppers, tons of pepper itself and other spicy spices. It seems to be jalapenos specifically for me. Which is tragic because I use to eat jalapenos by themselves and out of the jar growing up.

Give yourself like 6 months before thinking you can't eat something ever again. I had Chili at 8 weeks and it was a nightmare. I made it again at 4 months and that's all I ate for 2 weeks. lol!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
