No pre-op liquid diet ordered?

Recommended Posts

I just received my surgery date for March 6. During my multiple visits with nurse practitioner I'd neglected to ask about what the doctor required pre-op. Today I was told this Dr. only requires liquid 24 hours prior to surgery. Has anyone else had this same situation?

It varies widely between doctors. Some require 2 weeks of pre-op, some a week, some a few days, and some only a single day. I've seen others that could still have some meals of at least veggies in their pre-op diet, while others like myself was restricted to liquids only for 2 weeks.

Everybody just seems to do it differently.

Each surgeon has their own procedures. I also think it varies due to how overweight you are to begin with.

It may depend on the amount of weight loss before surgery. I was fully expecting to have to do a liquid diet. I loss 15lbs more than I was required to so he said no liquid diet needed.

I didn't have to do the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. No explanation was given. I only lost 14 pounds during my six month weight loss requirement. I've also heard it depends on the size of your liver as it has to be moved out of the way to complete surgery.

I only had a 1 day liquid diet before. More after of course. I lost 15 lbs to get surgery scheduled but 32 by surgery date.

I think surgeons are wising up to the fact that most of us don't/can't stick to that restricted of a diet for 2 weeks! If we had that kind of willpower, we probably wouldn't need the surgery. That's my theory anyway.

My doctor told me today that there is new research to suggest that the pre-op "liver shrinking" is unnecessary with the advancement in laparoscopic procedures. She also said that my liver would have to be double its normal size to actually be in her way, which it's not.

Mine didn't require one; I counted my blessings and tried to eat lightly for the previous month before surgery.

I had a comparatively lower bmi and was required to go on liquids only two days before the surgery. It depends on how much they want your liver to shrink before the surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
