My Hair is Falling Out!!??

Recommended Posts

I had surgery in May and have been doing great. Lately, I noticed a lot of hair in my brush, hands or towels. Last night, clumps were coming out.........huge amounts, not just little bits here and there. It's a little disturbing. I've heard of this happening with by-pass patients but not lap band. Does this mean not enough Protein? I know GNC has a "hair formula" Vitamin, but it's a huge pill and there is no way I could take that.

Any one had similar experience, and what did you do, does it stop and will my hair fill back in? I getting a little scared because it's huge amounts of hair. My husband said it looked like a dead animal in the trash can after I took my shower.:help:

I don't have a ticker yet........but down 52lbs since May 23!

First, congrats on your loss!

Second, :welcomeB: to LBT. I say that because a)it says you only have 4 posts, and b)you can't have been here long if you haven't seen TONS of threads about hair loss.

I am very sorry you have had to experience this. I am as well, I have red (natural) hair past my waist and it is falling out in gobs. I am beyond DEVASTATED. But I am not alone. I have gotten 80-130grams of Protein a day, I take a Calcium supp, I take a MVI, I take Biotin, I do EVERYTHING I am supposed to and it has not made one iota of difference. Most everyone says that it starts around four months after weightloss starts (could have a little to do with anesthesia, but I started losing before surgery and my Hair loss coincides with a few months of weight loss) and supposedly stops about 11months to a year in. I'm hoping it does. But as WASaBB says, I can cover up thin hair with a wig, I can't cover up fat.

Here's just a FEW of the threads about hair loss here. I only included ones with multiple pages of posts. Hope reading through them helps you! I feel for you, I really do!

Hi! We're in the same boat. My surgery was May 25 and I'm also down 52 lbs. I started losing hair a few weeks ago. Not quite the same thing as you because I don't have clumps coming out, but still a lot in the shower and when I brush my hair. My nutritionist said it's Protein and that I also need to be careful to get a balanced diet. I have a tendency to focus on the Protein I eat and carbs and often neglect veges and fruit.

I just sent my nutritionist an e-mail because I'm concerned that I've hit a plateau. Have been stuck at 52 for a few weeks and am looking for a way to jumpstart my system. I'll let you know if I hear anything else about the hair. You can buy Shampoo that contains Biotin. That may help.

Congrats on the -52 lbs! That's fantastic.

Stephanie

faith md- Thanks for your replies, I'll see what I can do.......that's weird, I just hit 4 months post op. I'm glad I'm not alone. I agree, beautiful wigs out there! Don't know how I missed the hair loss threads. I'm still trying to figure this site out. Been reading from afar, just starting to comment.

stefgray- congrats on the 52 and the same surgery month as me! Your Hair loss was where I was at about a week ago. Last night is when the "clumping" started. Hopefully won't get to that point. It sounds inevitable anyway and theres not much we can do about it. I do try to keep a balance diet and proper Protein so there must be something else to it. Before my surgery I was on some crazy diets for long periods of time, starved myself and never had hair loss. Thanks for the reply!

Hi ladies. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I had surgery on 4/30/07 and began losing my hair around the end of July. I was freaking out. Well...it has finally slowed down and almost stopped. I'm so excited. I made sure that I have 60 grams of Protein a day, I take Biotin pills and I use Nioxin for my hair. The last time that I got my hair cut (about three weeks ago), my hairdresser said that she can see lots of new growth on my scalp. Good luck...it will stop one day.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
