I can't eat... 2 weeks post op HELP PLEASE

Recommended Posts

So I'm 16 days post op and I'm having so many issues with food and liquids. I'm only averaging about 30 oz of fluids a day and 200-300 calories if I'm lucky. I'm barely getting in any Protein. Less than 10 g a day. I don't know what to do... so much seems to make me nauseous and I can't even stand the thought of food. I've already been to the hospital for nausea and dehydration. My mom is convinced that when I see the surgeons pa tomorrow that they are going to send me to the hospital to force me to eat. She thinks I'm deliberately starving myself for attention or that I'm depressed. I am upset about how things are playing out but I'm not depressed. I know this will pass eventually. When I can eat it's only about 1.5-2oz. I need calories from somewhere but I seriously CANT have any Protein Shakes. I've always had issues with them but since surgery... well those of you who've had surgery know what I mean. Help please! I don't know what to do! I've tried yogurts, Soups, Jello, scrambled eggs, ricotta cheese, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat... I really don't know what to do anymore. Even the unflavored Protein Powder is just ? help please!

I am 2 weeks post op
Today. Have had the same problem
Except the nausea. It has gotten a little better. I was able to get some soft fruit down today. I have issues with everything seeming to get stuck in my throat. You need to be seen to make sure it's nothing serious. Hang in there I still haven't reach more Protein or liquid goals yet.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.

It is common for individuals to be unable to meet their daily protein and Fluid requirements within the first couple weeks after surgery. This is because your body is in a major heal mode. So provided there are no medical issues, you should just keep trying and each day you should be getting closer and closer to meeting the daily requirement.

So in reading your post, the things that would cause me concern is your inability to meet fluid and protein requirements. Don't worry about foods at this stage.

Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even Water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I recently found a new drink "Bai" which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.

It is very important that you transition to Protein Shakes. There are many different types of formulations on protein shakes. I would recommend that you keep experimenting until you find one that you can tolerate. You don't have to like it, just tolerate it. I used Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) powder blended with Water and a half a banana. That worked for me. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you might try premixed Isopure. If you fail to consume an adequate amount of protein, your body will try and scavenge protein from your body such as your muscles, hair, your heart muscles, your teeth. If you are unable to tolerate any type of Protein shake, the only alternative I could recommend is to fall back to milk. Combine the milk with powdered milk in order to fortify it. [ 8 ounces of 1% milk combined with 1/4 cup of dry milk provides 14 grams of protein. ]

I started writing my response to your post and I had to erase it all. I could never have stated my thoughts as eloquently or as thoroughly as @James Marusek did. Everything he said is absolutely the gospel truth and you should all follow his advice to the T. Be patient with yourself and concentrate on those liquids. I absolutely hate Water but I do drink it. I have to buy the Spring Water as it just has a better taste and I use Crystal Light, sugar free Kool Aid Drops, and Grape and Orange Crush packets. It makes the water taste wonderful and I don't feel deprived. You can even add some powdered Protein into the flavored water. I have to have mine very cold to drink it but I hear others like it room temperature. There is no one size fits all when it comes to the meal plan. We all progress at our own speed. I still love the Premier Protein shakes. 30 grams of Protein per shake and they come in so many flavors. I love all of them. Good luck to you and don't be so hard on yourself.

I had so much trouble getting Water down. Then one morning I tried peppermint tea - that's what I used to drink before surgery when I didn't feel good. And it went down so easily. Ginger flavors of tea are also good if you are nauseous.

Something to try: simmer bone-in chicken or beef for 2-3 hours in enough Water to cover. Throw in veggies..carrots, celery, onions, etc. Strain. Skim fat off (or refrigerate to harden...easier to remove).

The broth has a surprising amount of Protein and minerals. Put a tiny amount of salt in, but if this becomes a large part of your diet, don't put much, if any in. Counts as Fluid.< br>
Sounds like your Mom might need to visit the board to see that everyone has trouble right after surgery. Added pressure to "eat" isn't fair if you are doing your best.

Have your doctor give you zofran and reglan and also omeprezole. I am 8 weeks post op and i was nauseated everyday, even with the zofran. My doc gave me reglan and it helped with both the yucky feeling and I am able to eat more without gagging. Hopefully you feel better.

I just read your post and I went through the same thing. I took in no Protein, no food and hardly and liquids. Nothing ever helped. I am 8 months out and still get sick. I do not even take Vitamins and I'm still here. This is something you will have to figure out on your own. I try foods that I'm not supposed to eat and mostly they stay down. Example 1/2 of a Ritz cracker and 1/3 cup juice. It will all work out for you I promise.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
