Can I add sugar to my hot tea when I'm on clear liquids?

Recommended Posts

I am three years post op and I have been at the same weight for two years, but I still have about 50lbs to lose. So I've been reading A LOT in these forums, and googling everything so I started increasing my Protein, low carbs, no soda, iced coffees, etc., exercising, lots of Water bla bla bla and I'm having MORE trouble losing than when I was just maintaining and doing whatever I wanted. I'm even gaining, slowly, but gaining. Wth?? So anyway I decided to start the pouch test and although I know I don't have a pouch because I am "sleeved", I've read it still helps getting you back to the basics and provides a "clean start". Which is what I think my body needs to get through this and lose... and lose constantly not just a couple lbs then gaining that back which seems to be happening.

All that to ask, with drinking tea as apart of the Clear Liquids on day one, can I add sugar? Lol. May be a dumb question but I'm not playing any games I NEED to kickstart my weight loss again.

First off, good luck!! Second...I always add a SMIDGE (less than a teaspoon for 12oz of water) of sugar to my tea...but if you don't want to do that, maybe do honey instead? 1 tbsp of honey has 60 calories in it.

Maybe instead of fat, you're gaining muscle? Muscle weighs more than fat remember...AND, you're throwing your body off so maybe its scared that you're starving it. Make sure you're getting at least 60grams of Protein a day and drinking plenty of Water. Don't drink at least 30 mins before your meals, during your meals, or 30 mins after your meals...(once your back on food that is).

Good luck! I hope you get to your goal! :)

If you want to avoid sugar altogether, you could use a sugar substitute. I use Stevia and like the way it tastes in my coffee. :)

I would try Stevia. Sugar and sometimes sugar substitutes can trigger carb cravings, so just be careful with it. Have you measured yourself? People say muscle weighs more than fat, but that's not accurate. A lb is a lb. A lb of fat weighs the same as a lb of muscle; However, muscle is more dense and takes up less space. That's why you can lose inches when you gain muscle, without the scale moving. Maybe if you see these NSVs, it will motivate you and provide you with positive reinforcement. Good luck!

I would not add sugar. It can stimulate cravings for carbs. Have you thought about following a strict Keto diet to get the remaining pounds off? I did keto pre op and now post op. Once you are off carbs, the weight melts away and you won't have cravings for sugar. My husband has lost 40 pounds since I started my pre op diet.

What exactly is the keto diet?

A Keto diet means it is ketogenic, basically very very low carb, high Protein and fat.

Being a few years out, you are now in the maintenance phase. Think of yourself the same as you were before the surgery, or same as "regular folk". The weight loss strategies the rest of the world uses are going to apply to you.

Take a little time to decide which train to jump on. Go to your local library and/or bookstore, go to the diet/nutrition section, and behold! Everything from South Beach Diet to Mediterranean to Atkins, etc. Keto will be there.

Read through the various concepts, and see if any of them sound like something that will work for you. If they promise weight loss without exercise, ignore that part. You must exercise!

Good luck!

If you need to sweeten your tea, you might be better off using raw honey mixed with cinnamon. Raw honey is honey that they don't cook all of the natural nutrients out of and turn into sugar Syrup. Immediately following my surgery I used this to heal the inside of my stomach and I still do when my stomach is agitated. That said, I almost always use Stevia as a sweetener and less my body needs raw honey because sugar spikes are bad. Lol...

I like xylitol in my hot black tea - just enough for a little sweet. Not as no-carb as erythritol, but I prefer the flavor. Herb or iced, I'll usually just used stevia. My husband went Keto recently for both himself and to support me as a new post-op. He used xylitol for a few weeks to help wean him off honey and recently has switched to stronger teas, unsweetened but with pastured heavy cream.

As an aside, he's lost about as much weight as I have in the last 4 months.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
