Band/Plication Revision to Bypass at 61

Recommended Posts

I am 61 as well. I got my gastric bypass December 9. Since then it has been a bit of an emotional roller coaster because I don't think the people prepare you enough for the changes but that is what this site is for. I received a lot of encouragement from the site. Now it is March and I have lost over 40 pounds and I started only 205 pounds. The difference in my life is Dramatic and all for the good! But it is as if you're becoming a whole different person and for me that has been a good adjustment. I'd be happy to be your buddy through this process!

I forgot to say that mine was a revision from the band, too!

I'd be happy to be your pal through your journey since we are so similar. I learned a lot along the way and there are things I wish I knew more than I could've talk to somebody about Who was more my age and going through a revision . My private email is and nwhc@live.com if you ever want to communicate privately.

i'm 64 and I just had revision surgery (band to bypass), on Monday. I can't say that I feel great, because I don't. I feel sore and tired, but I'm going to go outside and take a walk in a few -- my bowels haven't kicked in since surgery and moving is the best way to get things back to normal again. I'm also slightly nauseous, but I plan on waiting until tomorrow to see if the nausea lasts before I call my doctor for anti-nausea pills.

Hi

I am wondering if you went ahead with the surgery. I am 67 yrs old and am scheduled May 2nd for a revision from Band to Bypass. Reading this site and going to many pre-op and post-op Bariatric Meetings helped me with the fear, expectations, and ultimately making the decision. I too postponed making the change..for about 5 years.

Good Luck

Can you call the office and make an appointment with the nutritionist and go over everything you're eating? Perhaps the nutritionist can figure out why you're not losing.

Frankly, other than the 2-week pre-op diet, I don't think I could have gone on a diet to lose weight before my surgery. I simply didn't have it in me to do that. If the surgeon wants you to lose 25 lbs. before surgery there's probably a good reason, but can't you convince him/her to operate after you do the 2-week pre-op diet? It's worth asking the question, no?

Hang in there.

Yeah you are right. Frankly I started out very strict. Lost nothing. So I started to be less vigilant because I was really hungry. I'm going to give them a call

Notinks, I totally agree on all counts.....thank you. I do believe that the band will have to come out at some point, and I would like to do a revision before I gain ALL of my weight back. Though a bypass is the only revision I would consider, there is something about it that scares me. The sleeve scares me even more and it completely out of the question.

I think the idea of changing my plumbing freaks me out a bit and I don't know what to expect. I'm self employed, and if there are any complications, I couldn't put work on hold for anymore than two weeks; I would lose my clients! Although, I work from my home office and could rest when necessary. That in itself is a blessing!

I'm 64 and I just had a band to bypass revision on April 10th. Honestly, until I actually went to the hospital the morning of surgery, I wasn't sure I was going to go through with it. And for the first week after surgery, I would wake up in the morning and say "OMG, what have I done to my body????" The thought of changing my natural plumbing really freaked me out. This all said, I'm now 3-weeks out and feeling pretty good and the "What have I done," freakout thinking is completely gone. I think you should go for it. You're most likely looking at another surgery anyway to remove the band at some point, so why not just do it right this time and have a procedure that actually works? I'm glad I had it done -- no regrets at all.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
