A little sugar that bad?

I am going to speak to my Dr. about this but I wanted to see here what people have experienced. I know, that cake and candy and all the sweets are a no no, luckily I don't have a sweet tooth, so for me, this is not hard. However. coffee. I have tried for weeks (I am 12 days post surgery) I just can not get used to skim milk and artificial sweetener. So I would be so happy to just go back to my coffee mate..it has 5grams of sugar per tablespoon, and I am a 1 cup a day. Yes, now it's decaf...it would just make me feel like myself again. So here is the question for sleevers. Is a little sugar taboo because of the calories? Or is it because our new stomachs can not process it? What have your Dr's told you and what have you experienced?

I'm 5 months out and I do have a regular cup of coffee every morning with Creamer (Carnation) and a little Stevia. For me, once my stomach calmed down a couple months post-op, it just seems to settle my stomach and get me started in the mornings. Warm fluids have always gone down better for me (thick and warm better than thin and cold for some reason).

I'm down 48 pounds and almost to goal. Still losing although only about 3 pounds a month now.

I also wanted to add to what I said above, when family brings in donuts or we have a birthday party or something I do sometimes have a bite or 2, but never a whole piece.

This is your life and although we have to do what we have to do to take care of ourselves, you still want to enjoy life and have fun with family and friends. For us, it's just a fine balance and I just look at it like a challenge I'm going to beat!

Good luck! I always say that the people who are asking questions and trying to make that balance work are the ones that won't gain the weight back down the road.

For me, the problem is that once I have the tiniest bit of refined sugar, I want more. So I have to cut it out completely.

Regular sugar can be a 'slippery slope' issue for some of us, so that's why many VSG patients avoid simple carbs as much as possible. You're not likely to dump (both as VSG and from so little sugar), but it can and does happen. I switched to Monkfruit sweetener for my coffee and I can't tell the difference, but that's me :)

You DO have to decide where you want to 'spend' your carbs for each day. If sugar in your coffee is super important, then have it...but log it and count it, don't let it become part of a bigger pool of little bits of simple carbs over the course of a day. You've got a 6-9 month 'honeymoon' post-op, when you'll lose weight easily and quickly, don't squander that time by eating little bits of things you KNOW aren't good for weight loss. Those are better incorporated into your life when you reach maintenance.

Yes and before you decide that these are the carbs you do want try to figure out mathematically just how much sugar or carbs goes into consuming them for a whole year because those are the last few pounds you might want to lose and can't figure out why you can't lose them. I am tempted more when I let myself have that one thing back that's why I drink my coffee black. just saying'

I use the low sugar cream, 2 T and that's it in one cup of coffee and a Truvia sweetener. I'm pre-op and have lost so I think after surgery should be easier but I don't know about Desserts and restaurant eating yet. I hope to order low carb, high Protein meals at a restaurant and immediately ask for a container to put all the food but 2 or 4 oz in. Actually, I have to ask my nutritionist how much are we to eat at one sitting with the gastric sleeve. I thought it was 2 to 4 oz or 1/2 cup. Even lets say you get lasagna you can still lose if you eat small amounts. I have lost on Weight Watchers before and you can eat real food and lose but this will be way less and you SHOULD feel satisfied. Key word is Should!!!

I asked my dr what creamer she used in her coffee. She said CREAM! She said if you look, cream has less sugars than anything else, including skim milk, and you actually need to use less of it.

Plus the fat it has in it is healthy for you and keeps you feeling satisfied longer.

My NUT advised against fat free, skim milk and 100% sugar free items, she said the brain needs that fat!

I like xylitol in my black tea - just a little sweet and it doesn't make me crave sweets all day. My husband went hardcore Keto when I had surgery and giving up his honey was tough - he used my xylitol for a week or two and then discovered pastured cream. He tried new (stronger) teas until he found a combo he likes and doesn't use any sweetener at all any more. The fat seems to help him with carb cravings, too. He's lost about as much weight as I have, btw.

I still have 1 teaspoon of sugar in my coffee every day. I couldn't find a sweetener that I liked so I've been drinking it this way since day 1 post op & my NUT is fine with that.

I'm 18 weeks post op & I've lost 58 lbs.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
