Do getting sleeved help you get rid of meformin?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering getting sleeved to help me loose weight and reduce my insuline resistance, I'm currently taking 500mg of metformin 3 times a day, do anyone who got sleeved got off the medication after the procedure? Sometimes i doubt if I should get the bypass instead of the sleeve to prevent diabetes, I'm 6'1" an IMC of 35 and almost 70 lbs overweight, thanks for you answers and feedback

About a week after my sleeve I was able to get off of all of my diabetes meds (including Metformin).

Yes. I was a type 2 diabetic. Upon leaving the hospital I was off all medication for diabetes with the exception of on insulin pen only if needed on a sliding scale. I have not had to use it and it's Day 5 post surgery. I had the sleeve

I was on the same dosage of metformin as you, and was taken off it immediately. I'm two days out. I was pre-diabetic and received at least one shot of insulin in the hospital. I was also taken off omeprazole and amlodipine, so the only thing I'm still supposed to take is bupropion. So far, so good!

My husband was type two and was sleeved on 12/21. He has not taken metformin since two days before his surgery and was told to stop taking it leaving the hospital and not to restart unless his sugars were over 200. They stay in the 80-110 range. During the liquid stages he actually had issues with it dropping really low. His diabetes was under control. His last A1C before surgery was 5.1. He only took 1 time release (I think it was 800) a day.

Thanks for your answer @@SleeveSoon how long have you been sleeved and off metformin.

I was sleeved a little over a year ago and have been off of all of my diabetes meds since then.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
