Gastric Bypass with Giant Hernia and Crohns

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Brand new here. So happy to find this app while researching my pending surgery. I was looking for some advice. I have Crowns disease but my GI dr is on board with Bariatric surgery. I just had an EGD done last week with my Bariatric surgeon. After the test he told my mother that I had a giant hiatal hernia and might not be able to have the surgery. He told my mother to continue on my preop work and he would know more when he reviewed all my records. I just got my EGD report last week and it just said I couldn't have the Sleeve and would have to do the Bypass if I wanted to proceed. I have my next appt on 2/21 which will b the appt I set up my surgery for. You never meet the dr until this appt. You see the NP's at all prior appts. This is all I think about. It has absolutely taken over my thoughts. My fear is that he will me I can't have the surgery after all of the preparing I have been doing. Anyone else have any similar issues? I also have had so many surgeries in the past that he may want to do Open Bypass. Anyone have this done due to prior surgeries? Thanks for all of your feedback

I could not have the bypass because of scar tissue and intestinal issues so they had to sleeve me. The surgery was very long but successful. My recovery has been harder than normal too!

I had to have bypass because of GERD.. Barrett Esophagus, & H. Pylori .. On top of that it ended up being open because of a past hernia repair with mesh..

I have ulcerated colitis and I wasn't eligible for bypass b/c of that- sleeve was my only option.

Maybe you should get a 2nd opinion just to make sure. I wasn't even sure I was eligible for any procedure b/c of my UC and I went to 2 different dr's just so i was comfortable w/my decision.

I had bypass done on 1/25 and had a huge hiatal hernia. My surgery took longer than expected, but he said there was no way he could leave the hernia without repair. The hernia repair has been the most painful part of my recovery. The surgeon said I would be really sore and it would feel like I had broken ribs and he wasn't kidding. I was in extreme pain! I ended up with sub. emphysema and my face became so swollen and it crackled if you touched it. I am totally fine now and the surgery was a success. Message me if you have anymore questions.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
