Share your pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I notice that most of you seem to have been given pre-op meal plans or guidelines by your doctors.

Mine only asked me to lose weight without specifying a meal plan, I was wondering if some of you would be willing to share your pre-op diets for me to have a look at?

Thank you so much!

Mohamed

I had 4 weeks of total max 800 calories daily. Mostly shakes and other vlcd products, lean meat/cottage cheese/eggs allowed once daily. 64 oz of Water. No alcohol, smoking, cut back on caffeine if you do any of those. Used an app to keep track of my calories.

Is this your 2 week surgery pre op diet, or just the regular "lets see if you can lose some weight" diet?

My "see if you can lose some weight" diet was pretty bland/basic.

Breakfast: One Boiled egg, and 5oz Low sugar yoghurt .

Afternoon: Slimfast shake

Late afternoon/early evening: snack bars not more than 180cals

Dinner: Lean Cuisine frozen dinners + about 3-4 oz salmon.

Some other days my dinner was kale salad with 4 0z salmon

In all I didn't exceed more than 1200 cals a day (for 1 month).

I also stepped up my physical activity.

My 2 weeks pre-op was more strict

@@alfraqaisalkarni That's what I posted. Mine wasn't a dr's plan. I was told I needed to lose at least 10lbs before I could meet with the surgeon

My surgeon charged $130 for everything we need for those 2 weeks preop. I don't know what it consists of, but I will be purchasing it once I have my testing done.

It might be costs for nutrition classes I have to pay for them. I have Aetna better health insurance. I also have to purchase Protein shakes, five shakes per day for my pre op to help the liver shrink so they can see the stomach better.

My pre-op liver shrinking diet is: one Protein shake or bar at 730 am, 1030 am, 130 pm, and 730 pm... with one meal at 430 pm. I'm to aim that one meal a day to be high Protein and low carbs... my surgery center suggested Lean Cuisine or similar frozen meals since it's easy to track calories, carbs, & protein that way. To test my Protein Bars and frozen meals, I am to cover the 3rd number of the amount of calories in the item and compare the remaining 2 digit number to the amount of carbs... if the protein number is higher, it's an acceptable bar or meal. (For instance... a meal has 290 calories and 31 grams of protein... cover the zero in 290 leaving 29, and 31 is higher than that so I can have it, as long as it is primarily meat and veggies and I should avoid ones that have Pasta of any kind, etc). Then normally for my height, I'd have to limit my intake... including Protein shakes or bars... to 1100 calories a day... but I personally was told 1300 for me because of my BMI... (it has to be a certain number for my insurance to cover my surgery, but I still need to keep protein high and carbs low to shrink my liver).

I am on all liquids for two weeks. My surgery is January 23rd. I am so frustrated and anxious that i want to taste or chew some food right. I am trying to think about preparing my mind for my surgery. I am drinking Protein shakes 3 times a day. I could have strained Soups and broth. No meat, dairy or vegetables that I have to chew. So right now I am miserable. Tired and ready to throw in the towel for my survery

I have to pay $300 separate for the nutritionist, psychologist, and other stuff.. I don't know. I will come back and update if I remember!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
