Surgery yesterday woke up to find out they couldn't do it[emoji25]

Recommended Posts

I was supposed to have gastric by pass yesterday. I woke up from surgery to find out that my intestines/ colon was covered in scar tissue. The Dr. Tried to remove the scar tissue but it was to attached to the intestines. So they aborted the surgery.

Dr. Came in and said gastric bypass is not an option. Once I recover from this surgery then they will do the sleeve. I'm not real heavy (195) but I have diabetes, severe fatty liver, high bp, high cholesterol , sleep apnea, acid reflux, urine leakage, and a real bad sciatica from ruptured disk (try to avoid surgery with weight loss)and ankylosing spondylitis. Just to name a few. Dr. Said I have a lot of inflammation in the stomach. Weight loss will help this.

I'm not sure what the difference is between the two surgeries will be good wise. Please pray for a good out come for me.

You must have been really disappointed but having said that it's good that the dr didn't just do the surgery and butcher you. Thank the good Lord for that. I'll say a prayer for you! Best wishes.

If your not that overweight I'm surprised they didn't chose the sleeve as the first choice.

If your diabetic the surgery of choice is the Bypass.. perhaps thats why they chose that Im surprised they just didnt do a sleeve while they were in there. My doctor basically said they would strive for laproscopic bypass but left the option for open bypass or sleeve if something was hindering the bypass

I am so sorry to hear you went through one surgery only to have another. I would make sure that your surgeon has a very good plan for treating your acid reflux. It can get worse with the sleeve.

That being said, getting rid of your other health issues is a huge plus!

Best of luck to you!

I'll keep you in my prayers.

I'm very happy with my sleeve, and my weight has been dropping like a rock. I was taken off my medications for diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Everything has normalized. Hopefully you'll get the same result.

The bypass is recommended due to the diabetes and other issues. The sleeve can not do what the bypass will do for some issues. I had started the journey wanting the sleeve, i am 196 lbs now, diabetes on insulin and other meds for over 2 years and the best choice to help rid this is bypass. It isn't about the size in these cases for the most part. Although every case is different.

If your not that overweight I'm surprised they didn't chose the sleeve as the first choice.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
