Starting liquid diet 2 weeks pre-sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have my sleeve booked in for January 25th 2017. I have been counting down for nearly 6 months (waiting for my insurance wait-period to be over). This last week I have been trying to start on the liquid diet every day (a week earlier than I needed to). I have been eating a lot less than usual and have already lost nearly 3kg but my diet hasn't been all shakes and Soups. My question is do I have to stick to the liquid/shakes 100% over then next 2 weeks (pre-sleeve) or is it more about the weight loss - so if I keep calorie counting and drop a few more kg eating much less than usual, is that ok? Thanks heaps

I never counted calories. All surgeons have different ideas about the 2 week pre op diet.... I was told to do Optifast or Optislim..... ... So I either had a shake 3 times a day

or 2 shakes and a dessert

Or 1 shake , opti chocolate bar and a dessert..or Soup

Just had variations of these.

I hated it tbh. But I lost a few kilos.

It was all to shrink my liver and nothing to do with weight loss. Although if you are morbidly obese to be lighter on the op table would be most beneficial.

I started at a lower BMI and a weight of 84kgs...

I'm now 70 kgs 5 weeks later ( hit that weight at 3 weeks and have stalled for 2 weeks) ..

I thought it was about weight loss as the first place you lose fat from is your liver? My BMI is 36. My surgeon just said everyone does it pre-op. Just wasn't exactly sure if it had to be all 100% liquid

It varies widely by surgeon. Check with yours.

The point of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver, making it easier for your surgeon to access your stomach without potentially damaging your liver. It's not about weight loss at all.

The most important part of the pre-op diet is to not eat carbs. If you "need" to "cheat" make sure you do so with protein/fat... not carbs.

In order for your liver to shrink, it needs to be depleted of glycogen. By not eating carbs, your body has to resort to burning glycogen for energy and that glycogen isn't replenished so long as you don't eat carbs. Your body will then enter a state called "ketosis" where it instead must begin burning fat for energy. The second you eat carbs, your body will revert to burning those and storing glycogen again, so don't do it!

I've read that they will cancel your surgery if you eat while on the pre-op liquid diet because the fluids are what makes your liver less fatty, the liver has to be shrunk so the surgeon can see your stomach easier. Check with your nutritionist.

My surgeon requires 2 week pre-op diet of 800 calories daily. High Protein

All good guys. I have been having shakes minimum 2x daily and a healthy snack or something small for dinner with a WL Soup but will cancel that out and stick to 3x shakes/soups. I have 2 weeks tomorrow before my surgery. I work in a busy hospital environment and have just been struggling with the sudden decrease calories (probably 25-30% of my usual). I know this whole process isn't going to be easy but I have to stick to it and prove it to myself that I can do it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
