From your orientation to surgery date: how long did it take? It's taken me 4 months simply from orientation to consultation... I hope to leave my job by the end of July but can't if I'm in the middle of getting approved for surgery.

My orientation and consultation was the beginning of September and my surgery was the end of December. I think it's different for everyone depending on their requirements. I had to get clearances from a cardiologist, pulmonary doc, gastroenterologist, psychologist, and attend 3 nutrition meetings. I had to see each specialist about 3 times, my clearances were all done in at the beginning of December so they gave me a December surgery date.

18 months from first visit to surgery. It took about a year to get the prerequisites taken care of. It took an additional 6 months to switch surgeons and get ins approval.

We switched surgeons because my original surgeon, who was assigned based on coverage and location, had a $2500 lifestyle management fee that was not covered by insurance and was required to be paid in full prior to scheduling the surgery. The Dr in San Jose was just as highly recommend/regarded and only charged $300. That also includes food for the 2 week liquid diet.

For my husband it took 21 months. We decided I would go first and didn't submit his insurance approval request until after my surgery. It took almost 3 months of fighting to get an approval.

Attended the initial seminar in late December and had my surgery at the end of March.

I was delighted how quick the process was for me.

I didn't have an orientation, per se. The beginning of June 2016 I decided I wanted to do this so I called a few surgeon's office until I found one I liked and made an appointment. My initial appointment was scheduled for mid-July. On june 8th I saw my primary and told her my decision and when my appointment was. We recorded my weight and she started me on a "supervised diet" so to jump start my insurance requirements (6 month supervised diet). I saw my surgeon in July along with his nutritionist and counselor all on the same day. He said my appointment with my primary in June would count toward the requirements so that shortened my time by a month. I had my surgery on December 19th, so from my first visit with my primary it was 6 months and 11 days from start to finish.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
