Protein powder recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So I am on day one of high Protein pre-op diet. Surgery is scheduled for Jan 17th!!! I have a strawberries and cream Protein powder from Isopure that is horrible!!!! Does anyone have any Protein Powder recommendations? I can't drink this for the next two weeks. I have chocolate as well and will try that one when I get home from work. Hope that the chocolate is better!!!

I like the Quest Protein powders in chocolate and banana flavors. Quest does have a strange texture to it though, so if you can get past that, then the flavors are great. If you have a Vitamin Shoppe nearby, they sell single serve packets of several different brands of Protein powders. Also, I have found that the pre-mixed Protein drinks typically taste better to me. Whether that be the Premiere Protein, or Muscle Milk, or any other pre-made version. I prefer the Premiere Protein over Muscle Milk.

I don't have to start my liquids until next week because my doctor only requires 1 week, thankfully. Do you know your time yet? I should be finding mine out this week. i hope I am early in the morning so that I can just get it over with already! I can't believe we are only 2 weeks away!!!

My doctor doesn't want us using the pre-mixed for some reason...they explained why but I don't remember their reasoning. Right now I have the Isopure no carb strawberry and Dutch chocolate. Hoping the chocolate is better. If not I will be heading to Vitamin shoppe to check out Quest.

I wish I only had one week of pre-op diet. I have to do 2 weeks, with 3 shakes a day and 1 meal. I'm reeeeealllllly hungry right now lol!

I will not receive the time for my surgery until the day before. It's frustrating that is how they do it. U are lucky to find out ur time so soon!

We are almost there!!!!

How was the chocolate Isopure? I found out that my surgery will be at 11am on 1/17. Getting really anxious now!

It was actually Cookies and cream that I ordered. I thought it was chocolate. The Cookies and cream tasted better than the strawberry but still not good. I get this powder smell when I drink it, it's really hard to explain. But I think it's the smell more than the taste that is bothering me.

I use the Creamy vanilla and Dutch chocolate. Didn't like the chocolate too much, I think the Iso100 taste better. I have several flavors of the sugar free Torani syrups that i use with the vanilla, I think I'll add some peppermint to the chocolate next time. Might want to try the Torani syrups and add a little more Water so they are not too sweet.

I could not stand the flavors of the powders, so I used an unflavored Protein powder mixed with unsweetened almond milk and added PB2(sold everywhere now) and a little bit of stevia. Hope that helps, best wishes on your upcoming surgery!

Syntrax Nectar is really good, and a nice change from the milky sweet stuff most of us are used to.

I really like the Inspire brand. They have a lot of flavors and they are low carb, most flavors have 1-3 carbs per serving. They have very little Protein aftertaste and are whey protein isolate and designed for Bariatric patients. My favorite is the Reese butter cup flavor and the Peanut Butter cookie flavor.

I use muscletech chocolate from Amazon with almond milk. I start full liquids tomorrow and will be doing premier shakes for Breakfast and lunch the the muscle tech for dinner. In the ninja with a cup of almond milk it's like a milkshake.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
