I am not 'fat' enough??!!!

Recommended Posts

LOL, This thread was so much fun! I was so bleeping angry you couldn't believe it. Here's an update on what happened. I ate and ate trying to gain the 20 lbs to get the 40 bmi, and yes I did lie about my height. Although, I didn't see the post about that until today. I went to my new PCP, wearing jeans, 2 shirts and had 2 baggies filled with pennies stuffed in my bra, and another with quarters in my pants. I'm cracking up just typing it. Anyway, I weighed 8 lbs heavier(256) than when I went to my last WW meeting 2 days before. So, I get to the doc and he looks at my weight and says his scale is 10 lbs TOO HEAVY. :cool2: ARGGGGHHH So he says I actually weigh 246. Can you believe it?? I've never been to a doc office where the scale weighed me lighter than my home scale.

We talked about the Lap Band and he wasn't encouraging or discouraging but said he had 8 patients that have the band and they've all gained the wt. back. Then he told me to consider ordering an obesity drug from the UK (that isn't approved in the US) called Accomplia. He said it would kill my appetite etc etc. It costs about $170-200 for a months supply, cheaper than the band he said.. So I researched it just for the heck of it,=== not for me. After all that and the screening bs:mad: with these other docs, my husbands' company sent home a flyer saying that as of Oct. 1 2007, they will not cover any charges relating to bariatric surgery. :faint::faint::whoo:

Guess who is now going to be self pay??? I have to tell you the relief at being able to skip the 6 month diet pgm, the sleep apnea study etc etc. was unbelievable. How am I paying? I don't have 2 nickels to rub together but I have a dear friend who is loaning me the money. Lapbandland here I come, momma gets a Christmas present this year!

Thanks everyone for your input and for giving me a laugh over a really crappy situation.

I was just curious about why you had issues with Weight Watchers. You said you lost the same 5 or 10 pounds over and over again. I didn't know what was your issue. Just want you to be prepared for getting the lap band and make sure it's the right choice for you especially since you're self paying. It may look easy but it's not. They say it's only a tool, and I haven't seen anyone here tell you that yet but it's very true.

I thought it was going to be my life saver because I had failed with diests my whole life and even if I was successful at losing I'd put it back on eventually and then some.

It has been much harder for me than I ever thought it would be as a lot of foods will go right through the band like junk food and if that's a problem before the band it doesn't automatically go away. It's not just sugary drinks that go through so get as much info as you can and read the good along with the bad. It still takes much willpower once you've been banded and I've learned that the hard way! I have relatives in Lincoln. Good luck with making your decisions brandyII:smile:.

PS also each fill can cost somewhere between $400-$500 each.

My fills are $125 in the heart of Manhattan - and I am NOT covered by insurance for them...so check with your doctor

Kate E,

That's good to know, maybe if you don't have insurance they'll charge less. Some places will do that.

OMG, I have one bro in Exton PA and one in Lincoln NE what a quinkydink!

This exact same thing happened to me. I had my doctor order me a sleep study test for sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is listed as one of the morbid conditions. I knew that I snore and was told that I sometimes stop breathing at night. So, this was basically my last hope or gain 10lbs. Well, it turned out that I had sleep apnea. Now, the ball is roll in my favor. So, don't give up

Part of my extensive pre-op testing was testing in the pulmonary department of the hospital and I don't know what they called that breathing test but I could never get to the point I was supposed to and then when they do the blood test to see the oxygen level in your blood mine was too low which started a whole new thing where I had to meet with a pulmonologist who said I needed a sleep study which I did and was found to have many apneas during the night. But I got the clues I needed it prior at the hospital.

My daughter passed all her pulm tests and had a sleep study prior to her preop for surgery and found that she's a snorer who has disrupted sleep but not apneas. So I don't know if that would have counted toward her comorbids or not but her BMI was high enough so wasn't necessary.

Some clues to having sleep apnea besides snoring can be headaches during the day and usually you're pretty darn tired because you lack a good quality of sleep.

I'll tell you a little secret. My insurance said I wasn't "fat enough" and needed to go weigh again. My doc's office said to wear heavy clothes but I had a better idea!! Of course it being June in Kentucky its very hot so I took my son's weights (10 lbs total) and put them in my purse. When it was time to weigh I kept my purse on my shoulder:thumbup:. I gave what the insurance co wanted! I was approved the same day.

Hi, I am from Oregon and I weigh 247 and am 5'9"1/2 . I am being banded on October 15th by Dr.Ganta. He is in Austin Texas and he is doing my band through my bellie button. You have to have a BMI of no more than 44 to have it done in the bellie button. I am so happy not to have a scar! Also, in Oregon, you can have a BMI that is 35 to get the surgery, it just depends on each individual surgery center.i wish you all the best.

Do you have any health issues at all? My bmi to start was 37.4. However, I did have slight hypertension and sleep apnea, so my insurance approved it right away. You have to ask yourself this question.... have you lost 20 pounds before and gained it back? For me, over the past nine years, I have worked hard and lost 20 pounds many times. BUT, I always managed to put it back on. The chances are really low for keeping weight off with normal dieting. (sorry!!)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
