Help! Gaining weight!

Recommended Posts

I just had my bypass on Monday. Had a few small complications and actually just got home from the hospital a few hours ago (3 days post op). My weight day of surgery was 361.2 and when I weighed myself when I got home was 376!!!!!!!! Someone please tell me this is normal and will just fall off. I obviously haven't had anything to eat except for Water and a couple Protein Shakes so how can this be?!?!?! I don't go back to the doctor until Tuesday so I need some help from somebody who's been through this before!!!

It is most likely Water weight from IV fluids given in the hospital. Keep hydrated and it will fall right off!

Its normal. They have been shoving fluids in you to keep you hydrated. Its going to be important to drink a lot as its easy to get dehydrated. Good luck

I had nearly a 20 pound gain the day I got home and I was shocked! By my two week check up, I was 3 pounds below weight on my surgery date. It will come off -- totally not about you or anything you did.

It's completely normal to gain weight after surgery. It's because of the IV fluids and your body trying to heal from surgery. My nurse even said to not even bother weighing yourself when getting home because it'll be higher. Just weigh yourself a week after and you'll see that your weight has dropped significantly! I lost 10 lbs my first week.

After my surgery I had one meal with calories and then developed a bowel obstruction and was in the hospital for 4 days on "bowel rest" i.e. not even ice chips, just IV saline and potassium. When I got home I hadn't lost one pound! But after a few days weight began to come off!

It's Fluid retention from the IVs coupled with swelling, totally normal. It will go away in a few days. You cannot gain fat on a clear liquid diet. Stay off the scale until you go to the Dr. It will start coming off very fast very soon! Best of luck to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
