Alcohol first time post-op

Recommended Posts

I am currently 4 weeks post-op and am thinking ahead about a Christmas party my husband and I are invited to. I know I won't be able to indulge in the appetizers, but what can I drink that won't bother me? I have usually been just a soda person but we know I can't do that! lol

By the way, I only like wine and mixed drinks. Any advice, or is it just to early?

Too early. Let yourself heal first.

And if the appetizer is a soft Protein like shrimp, little sausages or meatballs, I don't see why you couldn't have some?

I'm quite the wine aficionado, drink smooth fine reds, and my first sip reaction, probably at 2 months was this is disgusting plus I could feel a burn all the way down. Now at 4 months it may take me a good hour to sip 3 ounces. I only do this occassionally. It's just not the same.

A cocktail or wine glass of Water with lemon slice. You'll have the appearance of alcoholic drink.

No carbonation and no alcohol...it's way to early! Please be safe, the last thing you want to do is vomit, get dizzy, or even faint at this party.

How about some apple juice or grape juice. It will look like white or red whine! Dilute it though!

Happy Holidays

My nutritionist was just talking about this yesterday... She said I'd probably never drink alcohol again because my stomach wouldn't break it down the same and it would be horrible for my liver with that being said- we're adults and if I must have a drink wait at least 6 months post op so the new stomach can heal.

If it were me, I'd take a couple little bottles of diet cranberry juice, and throw in a lemon. Your own secret sangria. No issues.

Right?! I mean, NEVER is a long time for most of us. Like you said, we are all adults, and capable of figuring out what works FOR US. As long as someone is good and healed up and it's not adversely effecting their weight loss or being able to maintain the loss, do what works for you to live a post bariatric surgery life in a non friendly post bariatric surgery world.

Omg secret sangria is now my new favorite term!! Also great idea! Not that I need to trick others into thinking I'm drinking but I need to trick myself! Nothing worse than going to a party and having Water. This will at least feel like a little treat. :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
