Janet - If you have someone that can help with your son a few days ask them. I have a 15 month old and if my DH hadn't been around I don't know what I would have done. I was really sore in my abdomen and couldn't have picked her up right at the beginning. Now I am much better, 5 days post, and could pick her up if I needed to. Good luck!

Good luck to all being banded today! My prayers are with you!

Jude - I was banded the day before you and I had problems getting Water down for the first 12 hours. I was able to get 2 ounces of water in 15 minutes down yesterday, day 2 but even today I have trouble with protien shakes. I do feel a LOT better today so hopefully you'll get over the hump. Does your doc know that you're having problems? Good luck, Beth

Jude, I'm not banded yet (halloween is my date), but from all the posts I've read, the first day can be difficult....everyone is different, because of that, please let your doctor know if you are having any difficulties.

Thanks Mistydxt

I'm going to have a break for 2 days. I have surgery on Tuesday and I've arranged for my sons Godmother to take him until Thursday afternoon. Hopefully that will be enough time. The only 3 problems I see are when I put him in or out of the tub, getting him into bed and in his carseat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The last thing I want is to pull my port or cause a hernia or something. Yikes. :o

After just having read through many of the posts on here I realized a lot of you want details of the surgery so I'm going to do my best to tell you what's going on with me. Please keep in mind my experience may be far different than yours.

Last June I had my gallbladder removed laporascopically and it was very painful so I expected the same pain - well, it just didn't happen that way for me. My surgery was scheduled at 7:30am, I went in at 7:40 (I don't remember going in - the nurse told me she gave me a Marguerita in my IV - that's the last thing I remember, must have been a strong "marguerita"!). Found out later my surgery was over at 8:22. Dr also fixed my hiatal hernia. I remember waking up in the recovery room around 10:30am. The nurse kept telling me to breathe deep so I did. She talked to me some and gave me some ice chips - they tasted so good. I remember needing to go to the restroom. Luckily I didn't have to be catheterized. I got to my hospital room around 11:45am and the first thing I did was get up and go to the restroom - on my own. I was amazed that I had minimal pain in my stomach and no pain where the port is. Figured it was because I was still pretty doped up, but I still have not had much stomach pain. When I told my dr's nurse the port wasn't hurting she said "don't worry, it will" but it still hasn't.

The most uncomfortable part was the pressure I felt in my chest - like I needed to burp and it wouldn't come up. OH YEAH - and the pain in my shoulders from the gas they inject - that was no picnic. By the next day that had let up considerably.

I stayed in the hospital for 2 nights. I was on IV fluids initially and had to use the restroom every hour the first day and night. That was a nuisance. I was not allowed anything other than ice chips and small sips of Water. Then I had to stop that at 5am the second day because I was going to have my swallow test (kind of like the upper GI but you don't have to drink as much fluid). I had the upper GI at around 2 pm the second day. The first stuff they made me drink was the nastiest stuff I have ever tasted - 2 sips, then they gave me 2 sips of the barium - it was a treat after the other stuff. Got back to my room and threw up about an hour later. Not much fun.

Once I passed the swallow test the nurse brought me Jello and apple juice - it was the best juice I had ever tasted but I didn't really want much. Only took 2 bites of the jello. Shortly after that they brought me dinner, more jello, chicken broth, tea. The chicken broth was good but I couldn't eat the jello after that - too full.

I've been home since Friday and I was out and about on Sunday. Went to the library, and did a little grocery shopping. I'm more tired than usual so I'm napping a lot. I've taken this week off of work and will work from home next week. Still no pain in the port area.

I'm doing my Protein Drinks and my fluids. Today I was actually hungry for the first time.

I hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions for me and I'll answer as best I can.

I wish you all the best!!

Gerri

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
