2 months since surgery 35lbs down and depressed

Recommended Posts

My sleeve was done on 10/6. I started to feel confident after the first 20 lbs but this past Sunday I had a birthday party for my 2 year old son and we had a photographer there. Not only does it not look like I've lost any weight I instead look huge. Maybe it was a bad choice of outfit. Maybe it was because I had my period the week before ... I don't know. Maybe it's because I'm good on solids and I can eat meat and pretty much anything I have in a small qty and chew well enough. Maybe I'm not getting enough fluids in. I don't know but I'm so depressed now. My starting weight was. 239 and current weight is 204. Any suggestions on what to do diff? Should I now be exercising? If so then what? And how long? i was self pay so my after care was pretty much non existent.

I think 35 pounds down is huge!! 239 is really not that big of a number so you will lose slower than some at higher weights. I wouldn't be discouraged by the way the camera made you feel. Try to distract yourself with looking at your son or other focus of the photos. Things that make you happy. Also the depression and emotions could be a big part of the hormone flux that accompanies this surgery. Try to keep you spirits up, walk more and get some fresh air. I feel similar some days and I try to distract myself and play with my kids and it makes me feel better.

Pictures always depress me. No matter how good I feel, they are mind poison. Just accept that you wont look like that forever and 35lbs is awesome! Im 272 right now HW 291 and I know I don't look how I want but I get revision-sleeved soon and know that I will look hella better then and that I still look better than 291 now. Just keep your eyes forward and maybe dont weigh yourself for a week or 2....no distractions on your plan. Feel better!

Yes"???? excersise is key. Find that rythum. 15 minute walks/ 3 times a day/ 4 times a week. Move up to 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 and then an hour.

I'm 8 months out 160lbs.

Good luck and best wishes!

Given your starting weight, 35 pounds in 2 months is an amazing loss. (It's actually a great loss for most anyone...) You're not going to lose all of your excess weight overnight. None of us are.

Good luck. Keep up your good work!

The biggest thing to do differently (and maybe the hardest) is to stop worrying about it. Weight loss is not linear, and it is not constant from person to person. Keep doing everything right, and don't sweat it. Some weeks will be great, and some won't. This is long term. Look at my SIG line.

Definitely don't be hard on yourself! You've lose 35 pounds! Celebrate!

I do understand where you are coming from though, I've lost a significant amount of weight and every stinkin time I get in the shower I look down over my Buddha belly and I don't see my feet! Grrr! I feel like a fat man all over again. Then when I step out of the shower I step on the scale and suddenly Buddha can kiss my saggy ass!

Thanks you guys! I often feel so confused and lost in this process. My height is only 5'3 and my BMI was like 42 at surgery. My bigger concern was that I lost most of that 35 in month one. And I hear all these horror stories about people not being able to eat meat or tolerate meat and I can eat it just fine. I have meatballs and chicken and fish and as long as a chew it well enough and don't drink before or after my meal I'm good. So I guess it sounds nuts but I worry because I'm not having as many problems with eating? Yes that sounds nuts

Do you keep a food log?

Do you weigh your food?

How many Grams of Protein per day?

How many grams of carbs?

How many calories a day on average?

In this case, patience is a virtue. It takes time to lose weight, and sometimes it takes longer for your body to "catch up". You will continue to shrink sometimes when the scale isn't moving.

And yes, you should be exercising. Start with walking, and look up some exercises on you tube or spark people.

Most importantly, you might want to think about resetting your own expectations. If you expect a miracle, you'll be disappointed. Every time. It is hard and slow work. If you set some realistic goals of meeting your Protein intake every day, Water intake, exercise daily, etc, you'll see that you are powerful and in control. Expecting to look a certain way at a certain date may not work out for you.

Take a look around on this site, since there are exercise discussions and lots of information about how to manage your diet. There are also books you can buy or get at the library that provide instruction on how to manage your sleeve. Self pay shouldn't eliminate patient education - that should be part of your aftercare and included in the price you paid, so you could also ask your doc. Even without out it, there is a wealth of good information on the internet and other places.

Keep up the good work - you'll be fine :)

First congrats on the 35 down!! That's amazing in 2 months!! Think of the last time you have lost 35 pounds in 2 months. I know that's never happened for me.

Second, pictures do not do anyone justice so be happy that your son had a wonderful party and great memories :-)

My surgeon stressed the importance of walking. Slowly first, 5 minutes about 6 times a day and work your way up to a solid 30 minute block of time.

Make sure you get at least 60 grams of Protein in and at least 40 ounces of Water. Also stop stressing. I remember feeling the same way around that weight loss number and a few weeks later the pounds just melted off.

Hi

35 lbs is awesome, but remember you are 2 months out and pictures never do anyone justice

Remember this is a new lifestyle and you have to adopt new habits

Exercise is definitely one of them

Join a gym, if you don't want to be around others yet, Comcast or your cable provider may have exercise such as walking starting to get one mile. Drink your Water, it's a natural laxative and can assist on your weight loss

Walking can assist with depression. Once you get your adrenaline moving, you will feel better and you will start to look better and have more confidence. Set sm2 goals for yourself, once you meet them individually Celebrate with a victor gig...be as silly as you want with it....gets adrenaline going (smile) you are going to be okay, you can do this

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
