I'm in shock! I was a pretty healthy obese person. A little borderline high blood pressure and a bad gallbladder.

Now at three years post op, down to 140 from 271, size 4 17% body fat, running marathons and I was just told by my new GP "oh you're pre diabetic let me give you diet information do you want a recommend for a dietician?"

WTH????

She says maybe it's due to the parathyroid issues i just had surgery for and she will run my numbers again in March. But seriously, what the heck? I eat low carb high Protein don't have any extra body fat... how is this even possible?????

Diabetes isn't always because you eat wrong. When I was diagnosed being Diabetic my hubby said very cruelly, now just look what you have done!! You ate yourself right into being a diabetic. When I talked to my Dr, he said that is not true!! There are many aspects of diabetes. Genetics, age, weight, and your diet. Don't beat yourself up it isn't your fault!! You are doing everything right for yourself!!

My health-obsessed, always-been-a-size-four sister-in-law is a type 2 diabetic. Her doctor said it's just a bad roll of the genetic dice.

Why do doctor persist in calling it "pre diabetes"? You are either diabetic or your not. If your fasting blood sugar is over 126 and you have diabetes. If you ever have non fasting blood sugars over 200 (some say 149) you are diabetic.

Well I guess what they mean is you are at risk for diabeties, your numbers aren't diabetic but they are higher than normal. At least that's what the link you posted says.

I guess I just don't know what my course of action is because I eat what they say you should eat already. I lost all my excess weight. I exercise a lot. What more can I do?

And what happens next? My doc has ordered repeat testing of blood sugar and A1C.

For what it's worth my blood sugar is high normal it's my A1C that is in the danger (high risk?) but not diabetic range.

It could have been they check you when you had just ate something high n sugar but I pray your results come bck great no diabetics in JESUS name don't get discouraged your doing a great job good inspiration

Your A1C is an indicator of your average blood sugar in the past 90 days. I think the value is supposed to be under 5.9. It's not a test usually done for non diabetics. Did you have gestural diabetes?

Because of you low weight you should consider seeing a specialist and start treatment. I'm a high risk medical case manager and it's been my experience that far too many drs just don't want to deal with new diabetics and tend to minimize it. But the best thing you can do for yourself is to be proactive.

An A1C doesn't measure your blood sugar but if a non diabetic ate a pound of sugar there blood sugar would still be normal.

Like a few others said. Some of us are just made that way. To give an example. My sister is about thirty pounds over weight but her number s are fine after years of being a diabetic she's inwhat we swam boarder land. My dad on the other hand takes medications ( metformin) does construction for a living eats healthy ish and had an A1c that is framed diabetic. Then there is me. I fit. The category perfectly. 80lbs over weight a1c is 8.5! That's up from 7.2 5 months ago. I work out two to four days a week but my eating isn't healthy all the time being a single working mom. But I'm also dependent on insulin or my numbers are even worse. Like an A1C of 11 or 12! So it's not always a size or eating thing. It's a genetics thing. And with type two you are resistant to insulin. So as you age even with perfect weight it starts to catch up if you have the genes. Just means hat you know how to manage it and the doctor can test again every few months to monitor. Good luck!

Oh and A1C is a 3 month overview or average of your blood sugars. So if you are always high then your A1C will be too.

@@jess9395 If you had/have hyperparathyroidism, it can cause insulin secretion and glucose tolerance issues. That could explain why, post-op from parathyroid surgery, your A1C would be high but your blood glucose level wouldn't. I hope it all turns out okay for you.

Thanks all this is all super confusing to me, I get that the A1C is an average blood glucose now and that therefore it's likely actually more reliable than just the one glucose number. Mine is 5.8 and they said 5.7 is the max so it's just barely into the danger zone. No no gestational diabeties I have no idea why they decided to check my A1C.

@shelterdogs is that a known thing? She shrugged like sorta "who knows maybe it's that" and these are my numbers from before surgery/my pre op clearance (which was about six weeks ago--this is how long our local managed care takes to follow up these days!). She didn't seem to know just shrugging me off.

I think I'm going to ask my endocrine surgeon for a referral to an endocrinologist at UCLA where I saw him and get to the bottom of this.

My liver is also currently suspect-enzymes are just barely off and they found a lesion but are pretty convinced it's a benign hemangioma.

Dangit I feel like I was actually healthier before surgery and weight loss!

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
