Dealing with anxiety by buying protein powders?

Recommended Posts

Apparently I'm dealing with my anxiety about surgery (12/19) by stocking up on Protein powders to be prepared. I'm nervous that the two I like right now I won't like after (and one is a pea protein so I'm only supposed to drink 1/day).

Is (or did) anyone else feel like they might be overpreparing like this??

Don't stock up too much. My tastes changed after surgery, and the powders I'd thought I really liked, I couldn't stand after surgery. It's good to get samplers and such beforehand so you get a general sense of what you like and don't like (couldn't stand fake strawberry before, can't stand it now) but don't buy too much. I had found a Syntrax flavor I really liked and an unjury, so I got tubs of those and some unflavored stuff. Post-op, all I could stand was Premier Protein. I suspect I'll like the powders again and if not there are some recipies I can make with them, so it's not a total loss, but if I had it to do again, I'd just order another round of samplers for after until I figured out what I did and didn't like.

I was feeling the same way but after my consult with my dietician I feel better she recommended GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder. I found it on Amazon. I plan to use this post op it has no flavor and can be mixed with anything including Water to help get in all your Protein. I am using Premier Protein shakes for pre op. Good Luck to you!

Oh, yeah, I guess I wasn't clear. I'm stocking up on pretty much all of the variety/sampler packs I can find, plus I got a tub each of unjury and GENEPRO unflavored.

I did get a full tub of a key lime pie though because it's my absolute favorite flavor for everything, but I'll probably mostly finish it pre-op.

Yeah, I would agree with that. Of course given that I can't seem to lose weight fast enough or just enough period to please my surgeon, I've been on mostly Protein drinks for months. I think I have a partial tubs of every Protein Drink known to man. I can make smoothies for my kids out of the ones I don't like any longer so I'm not too worried about that. The only thing I can really attribute it to is anxiety. It's not like I can't get more at any time.

I bought several flavors in smaller containers to last me through to post surgery. Now that I am back to solid food, I have not had much trouble getting to 100 grams plus of Protein, so I am not drinking as much. Protein Bars are a lot more satisfying and a whole lot easier to stick in my pocket for when I am running around, or even just up in my shop. I do have a five pound can of Gold Standard Extreme Milk chocolate, but I came out of surgery loving that stuff. It has replaced my desire for a big ole glass of chocolate milk.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
