Tired of hearing I don't need surgery!

Recommended Posts

TenseinTexas: I'm sorry you have had such a struggle. It does get much better. I hardly think about it except when I get full so quick. I do still have some intestinal issues (which seem to coincide with the gurgling), but I feel great most of the time and definitely feel it was so worth it. Someone asked me recently if it was reversible and I said No, but why would I ever want to?

Thank you so much. I need encouragement! Even the doctor was like " hmmm usually

People feel great at this time"

The PA at my doc told me "good luck, see you in a year when you can't absorb Vitamins and are dehydrated." Ummm ... idiot!

We are all behind you. Our stats are similar, I'm 5'5" and started at 239...down to 202. Surgery was 10/4. Do what's best for you!

Amen.... I feel like I want to say let me handle me and you handle you.

I've gotten it a lot too. I just tell them it is to get off the 9 heart pills I'm on and that shuts them up my surgery date is 12-12-16

I'm praying for you... I know it will turn around , you will get better I have read some true horror stories on here but in the end it turned out to be a great story. So hang in there and don't lose hope. You will get thru this.

Why are you not happy that you did surgery? How much have you lost.

I had a lot of people tell me that too- well the people I have told---- I was 212 and 5'4. But I know I would of never lost it. I am 14 weeks out and still not super happy I did the surgery. Hoping it turns around.

I actually haven't weighed in a few weeks but last time I weighed I had lost 43 I think? From week 8-14 I was nauseous all day - every smell made me gag and all food made me so grossed out. I hate Water now. Which is so bizarre and stinks because I don't drink coffee... So options are slim ( don't like crystal light type drinks- too sweet now) I went to the doctor multiple times but he just said my stomach must be sensitive . Just this week I have started feeling a bit better. I can't eat meat at all- which is worrisome to me because - I hate hate Protein powder and I worry I will have to take it my whole life

I just feel like before I felt fat. Now I feel

Sick. I would rather feel fat.

However I am still hoping it will turn around .

Okay, I'm at my PCP getting preop labs and EKG done. The nurse comes in to do everything and says oh you are having surgery & I answered yes. Then she saw what type surgery. She was like you are 222 lbs and you look so great why would you do this. I told her I started way higher at 244 and loss I have now is result of a 90 day dietician consult with diet changes. I said it's not that I can't lose the weight , it's that I can't keep it off. She said you are at risk for clots, stomach leak, taking Vitamins rest of your life and not to mention the nausea and diarrhea. I asked her if she had surgery and she said no but I had patients that had gastric sleeve and they have told me. I was like everyone is different and I trust in God and know I will be fine. She was like you don't need it. I wanted to say leave me the heck alone . She is seeing me after 20 lbs gone but didn't see me at 244.@ 5'6 . This is so irritating to me... no one is in support of me doing this . My PCP is on board though so that's good. Just tired of people saying what I don't need. I know my body ... lose 40 pack on 60... story of my life. I'm doing what's best for me. Bad enough my husband just doesn't get it and is totally against me having it. Geez!

I'm sorry to hear that. Me too. People tell me the same thing and they even say I'm going to look sick being skinny. I'm doing it for me and my health. Good luck

Sleeve patients don't have malabsorption, so they don't necessarily need Vitamins for life (though it's suggested for micronutrients), and they don't typically have nausea/vomiting/diarrhea past the first few weeks post-op. The risk for clots is the same for any surgery, and leaks are very rare. So she's badly misinformed.

Also, just FYI, most doctor's offices don't actually employ registered nurses anymore (though there are a few that still do), so there's a good chance the "nurse" you're talking to is actually a medical assistant. While I don't want to dis MA's, they are absolutely critical to keeping patient flow going in a doctor's office, they are NOT registered nurses, and their training is limited to taking vital signs and a few other tasks they do in a doctor's office. So next time, ask her what her credentials are. Not that having an RN makes what she's saying OK, because it's wrong regardless, but it might help your perspective of where she's coming from, or give you ammunition to shut her down if that's what you want to do.

I address a lot of this kind of crap in my post

http://www.theantichick.com/2016/08/05/the-easy-way-out/

Bottom line, if diet/exercise worked even 50% of the time, they might have an argument. But the data tells a different story. I have no issue telling people to educate themselves before they start lecturing me about what to do with my body. My medical team and I came to a decision about what was the best option for me, and everyone else needs to respect that. If someone has a genuine concern or information, I'm happy to listen, but I don't tolerate people telling me I'm making the wrong call based on bad information.

Good luck to you!!!

Well said.

Heya, fellow 'Bama sleever! I just said this on another thread but I'll say it here too. I get this all the time too: "you're not that big, do you really need this surgery?" I'm 5'4 and I'm 215. Just like you, I'm sick of losing just to gain it back. I was in a 5k running program and working out with a physical trainer this summer, you'd think I'd lose weight. Nope! I

Angeline Jolie had a double mastectomy, and she didn't even have breast cancer...YET. Key word there is 'yet'. She knew her chances of breast cancer were high, and she didn't want to risk it. And the press called her brave. I'm similar but a bit different....she doesn't have cancer, but I AM obese. I don't want to get worse. I don't want to hit 250 or 300, and it seems like I'm doomed (my parents were both very obese). I am making this choice for my future. I'm already on a CPAP for sleep apnea, cholesterol meds and my blood pressure now is terribad. I'm sick of diet pills (I think I was becoming addicted to them) and there's not a 'diet' I haven't tried. I'm making this investment in myself. My husband isn't against it, but I think he doesn't completely get it.

So, I hope from reading the replies from this thread you know you're not alone in this, and we have your six (as we say in the Army). :)

I would let the doctor for whom that nurse works know that she is putting her personal opinion on a patient's medical plans. Not her job or responsibility. She was out of line, given the context of her being at work.

In general, other than your immediate support system (if any), don't tell anyone. You don't need people's negative, uniformed energy coming at you as you are making decisions to better your life and get a peace about your body.

Again, that nurse had no business interjecting her personal opinion into your medical decisions. Not her place. Don't get her fired, but I would tell the doctor that you'd rather she not have addressed your personal condition with a negative energy.

I'm pretty sure I heard something similar as I was waking up from surgery. "Not THAT big." Clearly I am or the surgeon wouldn't have agreed to it.

I had sleeve surgery and have been at goal for 18 months. I lost 30 during the work up for surgery and people told me oh then why do you need surgery. This was some who has been a size 6 her whole life. I knew what I needed to help me lose the weight. If could do it by myself I would have. Don't let others judge you or bring you down. Bariatric surgery is a very personal thing. And it's nothing too be ashamed of. People who have never struggled with their weight just don't get it and never will.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
