Ladies only - IUD or Implant?

Recommended Posts

Help needed!

Can anyone tell me what your experience was with the IUD (skyla or mirena) or the implant (nexplanon)? Looking to regulate periods and endo pain that comes with them after they went crazy after surgery. I'm 27, no kids now, but don't want to take that option off the table.

Thanks to you all!

Yeah I'm a little scared of something like that with an IUD.

I had the Mirena for several years. I found it made my periods bearable and I pretty much never bled. Switched to the implant (due to me being paranoid about finding the string for the mirena haha). After the nexplanon went in, I had horrible moodswings for like 2 months - I wanted to die, I cried at everything, etc. Since then it evened off to normal moods. I experience less cramping and less period/psm symptoms using the implant, but I do also bleed, which I did not on mirena. With the mirena, I did not bleed, but I still got horrible cramps, increased breast tenderness, bloating, etc. All in all, I'm happier with the implant, but those first two months were ROUGH.

Next month I'm getting the essure & will be done with other birth controls haha.

Oh good, I'm sure you're looking forward to that!! Thanks for your response. I'm concerned about the cramping that occurs with IUDs and this hormone dump just makes things whacko.

I've had Mirena for almost 5 years. I love it. I was really irregular and my periods were SO painful. They're almost nonexistent now. I didn't have a lot of side effects. A lot of people complain about the bleeding when it's first put in, but it was worth it to me.

Had Mirena for 1 year and it was the worst year of my life! Bled nonstop for 6 months followed by 2 week periods every other month, cystic acne, hair loss, anxiety, depression, and weight gain. Got it out in June and I feel like myself again!

I have a copper IUD. Can't do the hormones, they make me suicidal.

I'm concerned on the hormone piece. I'm taking continuous bcp but have to tp control endo. With the weight loss comes the hormone dump from hell, so doc recommends mirena or nexplanon. I just don't know which to choose. I'm battling it in my head so much, you'd think it was life or death haha.

I have Mirena, on my 2nd one even. Reduced Migraines (hormone), and have only had like 2 breakthrough light (spotting) periods in 9 years. One of those was after VSG surgery... spotted for 3 days, then it was done. Nothing since.

Insertion/removal is a huge B**ch. No 2 ways around it, it hurts. But the worst of it is over in a couple of minutes, and then it's just cramping like a heavy period for a couple of days (at least for me).

My 19 year old daughter has the implant. She bled for 2 months straight, and after that it smoothed out and she has lighter periods than she did.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
