Questions for your surgeon

Recommended Posts

What are some questions you asked your surgeon? I'm having RNY on 11/5 if all goes well and I'm curious. Thanks!

I originally wanted the sleeve and they said due to my acid reflux the only surgery I could get was the RNY so I asked him to explain why. He did a very good job. My husband also asked how long people are normally out of work for this surgery

Make certain you have a thorough understanding of the diet and stages. I think that's probably where folks have the most difficulty in the beginning.

Also, discuss exercise: how much, how strenuous, and when.

Finally, ask everything you need to know about pain and nausea control.

I would also ask how many incisions will you have and what to expect at the different stages. I'm still a little fuzzy on the stages because everyone says something a little different.

@@Tayfusion304, also, o would ask if they sew at the top opening of the stomach? Do you sew all the way down manually? Or do you use the staple tool? If you use the staple tool, do you reinforce the top and bottom of the stomach manually?

You might want to watch a YouTube video of the surgery.

This is a great list!! I hadn't thought of many of these!

I will try not to repeat any from prior replies in this post, but here are some of mine. I don't go until 12/23 so I'm still compiling my list.

I know a LOT of these are answered on a personal basis here on the forum but as many people say - every program/clinic/surgeon/insurance/patient is different so it's best to ASK how these apply to YOU so you aren't sorry later after making assumptions.

Pre-Op

How much weight will I be expected to lose before surgery?

What if I lose more than 11lbs on my pre-op plan making my BMI less than 40?

What are the requirements to be approved? sleep study? Cardiac tests? Psychiatrist? Nutritionist?

Based on my height/weight/age, do you think I'll have extra skin to remove after?

Post-Op

Can my spouse stay with me after surgery?

What am I allowed to bring to the hospital with me?

Any suggestions for what I SHOULD bring?

How many follow-up visits will I have after surgery and how often?

What if I become pregnant after surgery - risks for baby and me?

This is all I can think of for now. I'm sure my surgeon will LOVE me

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
