November 23rd Surgery Date - My Story

Recommended Posts

I have been heavy my whole adult life. I have dieted and gained as you do but nothing stuck. Thanks to back to back surgeries (bunions/hammertoes - both feet and a new knee) in less than a year my mobility has been stagnant due to pain because of my weight. I decided it was time. I had told myself I wasn't going to do this unless I promised myself I would follow through to the end (plastic surgery upon completion). I asked my PCP to refer me for bariatric surgery. I had thought about it off and on for a very long time but was never a candidate. Oh I had the BMI covered but no co-morbidities. Lately I have added high blood pressure and severe obstructive sleep apnea.

So my journey started. I had to go to a seminar before I could make an appointment. After that I met with my surgeon, the nurse & nutritionist. I had homework, lots of tests (My doctor sent me for a CT scan on my heart since I had taken FenFen which showed I had a moderately enlarged ascending aorta - which led to a MRI w/contrast before I could be cleared for surgery), psychiatrist and had to lose between 15 - 30 lbs. I was given a tentative surgery date of Nov. 23rd.

I went for my final appointment. I had done all my homework, lost 22 lbs., and decided on Roux-en-y over the Sleeve. (I had the option of either one). I have Blue Shield *** and the approval came through the first time. So I was given my pre-op drink & body wash and I'm set for Nov. 23rd.

I had seen the Vitamin Patches and my nurse raved about them so I've already ordered the 3 I need to use every month. I have powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein powder and Isopure Zero Carb Creamy vanilla. I have a shopping list for next weekend to pick up what else I would need.

I'm ready for this. It's time.

Congratulations!!!! It will be here before you know it!! I had my RNY July 2, 2013. I went below my goal weight in 6 months. I gained 8#'s back and have maintained my weight loss for 2 and 1/2 years. Here are my STATS: HW 249 (this time I had got up to 285#'s but managed to lose down to 249) SW 232 LW 117 CW 125#'s. I have improved my life so much. Everything I went thru has been worth everything!! I use to take 12 different meds. I was so insulin resistant and was on Insulin and pills to try to get it under control. NOT able too. Now I am off all diabetes meds and I take 4 different medications now plus my Vitamins. GOOD LUCK!!

Thank you! I can't wait. There are so many things I will be able to do after this that I can't (or haven't been able to in years). Horseback riding, amusement park rides, travel, hike, camping, etc. I look forward to going into any shoe store and buying a pair of boots without an extended calf.

I also look forward to lower blood pressure, hopefully my sleep apnea will go away and more energy than I know what to do with!

You can find them on here which is where I saw them and asked my nurse about it. They are from PatchMD and my nurse raved about it. (She was even wearing one at the time). They love them because you get all the Vitamins you need and completely bypass the stomach. (<-- pun intended - haha). I was told to get the Multivitamin Plus patch, B12 Energy Plus Patch & the Anti-Aging Topical Patch. Through PatchMD I got a discount for autoship of 40% off (good through 12/31/16 on new orders) so what would normally cost me $60 a month costs me $36. You can get 30% off a single order with code patchit30 or 40% off autoship using code patchauto.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
