Before & After - 3yrs +

Recommended Posts

So, I went to the seminar last night. The surgeon said the following statistics

1 in 150 people maintain significant weight loss when left to thier own devices...less than 1% eek!

Note: surgery failure = 25% regain

BYPASS = 20%

SWITCH = 10-15%

SLEEVE = 20-25%

So, I am looking for long term inspiration. I am fascinated at the Before&After thread. But I'm curious about the long "termers"

You need to look at more than just the regain percentages. They dont give the whole picture. Even a "failure" of 25% regain is still a 75% loss which can make a huge difference in some ones life. For me thats going from 385 to 235.

You also need to consider how each surgery fits into your life. I went with the sleeve because

1) the rny can lead to dumping and diarrhea. Having already lived with chronic diarrhea for 13 years, I didnt want to "double down" in that area

2) I was worried about the malnutrtion aspect of the rny

3) Being relatively young, I considering which surgery would be easier to live with for the next 40+ years

Rny and DS might lose weight faster but at the 5 year mark the weight loss between the 3 is very similar.

Also, I have the option to revise the VSG to a DS if weight loss becomes a problem.

Finally, the thought of an unused stomach just chilling in there creeped me out.

I'm three years out. Sleeve. I'm up 5lbs from my lowest but have made the choice to stay here relatively easily rather than struggle for those last 5 vanity pounds forever.

271-136 and now I'm 141. Wearing size 4.

Does that count as a long termer? What do you want to know?

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
