Here it is - my newbie post

Recommended Posts

I didn't think I'd be posting like this. After all the research, I thought I would sail through (LOL - not!). So here I am, making my newbie post about newbie things. Here goes:

I can't eat enough! I get 800 calories in on a good day. Today, I had an egg white mcmuffin with no top and 1/2 of a hamburger steak with cheese. This was at 12:30ish. 7 hours later, I am still full and have 0 desire to eat anything even though I've only consumed 400 calories.

And now everyone's favorite - the stall. Lost 45 pounds (310 to 265) in 5 weeks. Last 2 weeks, nothing. I was ok with it, embrace the stall and everything UNTIL I gained 2 pounds. What the?

I'm female, 27. HW 310, CW 266. 7 weeks post vsg. I hit Fluid goals but not protein/calorie goals. I follow plan 99%. No pork chops or swedish fish here.

I know the depression, regret, and other negative crap is normal. But. I am feeling extra extra discouraged the past few days!

@@rolosmom7 There's not enough research to fully understand how we will be post-op. I'm only counting Protein and fluids right now 2 1/2 weeks) but could only meet protein with supplements (shakes or unflavored protein powder). Why don't you try foods with protein that may not be as filling (yogurt, egg salad, tuna, baked fish) and see if you can eat more frequently. Gaining 2 lbs is not unusual - could be Water retention (too much sodium), your period, Constipation, etc. 45lbs in 5 weeks is great - I could only hope to lose that much! Congrats!

Thank you. It really just depends on the day what I eat, although I am terrified of tuna after I choked on tuna salad week 3 or 4. Lol. I'm trying to find what my sleeve likes and it's a tall task. Did finally find I somewhat enjoy oh yeah one bars - so that's a plus. Even then I just get so full from them! I don't want to screw my metabolism forever.

Healthy fat is not the devil. It's ok to eat eggs with yolk. Skip the bottom of the muffin, too, for now, as well. Honestly, I couldn't do anything but a real soft scramble with butter and cheese at your stage. A harder egg was too much for me.

Is a hamburger steak breaded? It is where I'm from! If so, it's too soon for breading. Takes up too much valuable real estate. Ground beef sticks for me still, so...

Add a spoonful of nut butter if you can, some avocado (to that "burger" maybe?), and a few cheese cubes.

It took me a year to get to 800 calories. I was sipping Protein shakes through month six to get HALF my requirement in.

Ugh. Just keep swimming.

Oh! Crab cakes are awesome, too!

I was also really big on any kind of meat with sauce. Rotisserie chicken pulled and shredded with gravy, taco meat mixed with re-fried Beans and sour cream, chicken salad with extra mayo and mashed to mush, egg salad prepped the same, SPAM (gross, right? But it is soft!).

Think softer Protein that will digest a bit easier.

And crustless quiche!!!!

Oh no - definitely not breaded! Just like a hamburger with cheese and Tomato. Hamburger steak might not be the right word. Thank you for all your suggestions. Avocado would've been excellent on the burger!

Haha I just saw your SPAM comment. LOL!

I actively avoid food that give me that really full feeling. I take that as a signal that I'm not ready for that food...or I reduce the quantity. Ie with meats I limit to 2 oz even though I'm allowed up to 3 oz on plan. I could be getting rid of shakes now and just eating food for Snacks, but feel too full for lunch if I have a solid food snack in the morning, so I still do shakes for my morning snack. I can have a real food afternoon snack and still be hungry for dinner, so I do that. Bottom line, listen to your body.

I'm alsohaving what I call mini stalls and had a week with a 1lb gain (liquids to purees). Week 3 and now week 5. I've been stalling for a week or so then dropping .5 or if I'm lucky 1lb...then back to a stall. It is a bit nerve wracking, but doing my best to deal with it. It has been helping me to occasionally test my urine for ketones...at least when the scale isn't moving the ketones mean I'm burning fat.

Thanks, it probably is a sign. Normally if a food makes me feel or become ill, I put it away for 2 weeks. Maybe I should do the same with extremely filling food.

I have been taking an eat-8-times-a-day approach. With the exception of the 2 times a day I have cottage cheese, my "meals" are usually no more than 2 oz (the cottage cheese is 1/2 cup which is about 4 oz). I get more full from the 3 - 2oz salmon "meals" every day that I do anything else (scrambled egg with cheese, cottage cheese, string cheese), but not to the point of being uncomfortable.

Like the other said, I'd use the Protein shakes to get your Protein for now. I was just able to ditch them last Sunday when I was able to add in fish. That made me be able to get it all in from food, but it takes all day (usually 12-14 hours) of working at it to make it all happen.

Hang in there. You're doing great. The stall sucks, but it will pass. Mine did, and I know that yours will, too!

I am a little confused on what your concern is. I am 4.5 mths out and average 700 to 800 calories a day. I only track them out of curiosity. My plan calls for me to track Protein and liquid. Some days I can eat more than others. I still supplement with Protein because I can't eat enough solid protein.

Relax and follow your plan. Supplement when you need to. On days when you don't want to eat, be grateful and learn to eat to live. This is a lifelong journey now. Don't over stress.

Thank you!!!! I'm going to try maybe 6 times. So I can still get my drinking windows in. I also think I'll switch back to fish vs. pork or beef.

My concern is not being able to eat enough and screwing my metabolism - my plan says 800 to 1000. So I just get nervous eating so little. I'm a very anxious person, so realize I'm probably worrying unnecessarily.

it's more important to get enough Protein that calories. Have you considered that your body is having g problems digesting beef? I read that chicken and fish digest better and so provide more Protein per oz.

Also, remember to take a good quality multi Vitamin plus Vit c for healing and Calcium for bones.

Thanks. I've got the Vitamins - although whoever said Celebrate soft chews taste like a starburst must have forgotten what starburst taste like. Lol!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
