Transition to pureed food.

Recommended Posts

My Dr.s group is very conservative and has us on liquids for the first 4 weeks and pureed foods for another 4 weeks. I was one of the lucky ones who had no nausea, no pain, up and walking and discharged after 1 night. No problems at home at all. Never needed anything more that Tylenol and really didn't need that after a few days.

But.........yesterday was my first day for pureed foods......I had 3 TBS of Cottage cheese, then 3 TBS of refried Beans for lunch and a soft scrambled egg for dinner. One Protein shake and 2 TBS of protinex, so got my Protein in. Really struggled to get my Water in.........no liquid 30 min before and for 30 min after. And I was really full.

Woke up this morning feeling weak and dizzy and that has lasted all day. No energy at all. I have been walking 2 miles a day for the last 3 weeks, so this is really puzzling. Anyone else have a "swoop" in energy at 4 weeks or at the transition from full liquids to pureés?

Thanks for any advice.

Didn't mean to send that last one yet, that was an accident. But anyway. I've been having near black outs because I haven't been getting in my Water. Now im giving myself more of what i need. Make sure you get your Water. It makes a big difference. Even broth with help. Had more water yesterday than i had in a while and it still wasn't where i should be but it was way better. Monitor your urine. I noticed ive been peeing like....2 to 3 times a day. And that was because i made myself go. I had no urge because i wasnt drinking much of anything.

I am hoping you are both right. Monday I struggled to get everything in and Tuesday was the worst I have felt since the surgery. Worked really hard to keep things spaced right and get all in and felt better today. Thanks for the advice. I have not told anyone but my husband so really rely on the kindness of strangers.

definitely make a point to get your fluids in. that was the toughest part of transitioning to purees for me - started back a work and having to separate liquids from purees. Made it tough that first week on purees. set reminders on your phone to prompt you to drink if it helps. Also, I struggled with fatigue for a good 6 weeks but it does get better. The dizziness could definitely be from not enough fluids but also check your blood pressure (especially if you are on any meds for hbp), I was shocked I quickly I need to reduce my blood pressure meds.

Based on how much better I am feeling today after being really strict yesterday with my liquids, I think dehydration was the issue. Not in any bp meds so that's ok. Drinking like a fish today. Wish it was a margarita;)

Are you taking a B12 sullement? That may help with the energy.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
