Mine was one of the long ones. 3 hours into the surgery, the surgeon came out and told my parents she had not even started on the banding due to having to remove a lot of adhesions from previous surgeries ( accident from work). She told them that if she didnt think I was so serious about the weight loss, she and most all other surgeons would have stopped and given up. I have thanked her over and over in my prayers for not giving up on me. Total surgery was just over 4.5 hours, so I had to spend the night for observation....Dave:bounce::bounce:

:confused:Hi I'm new to the board and have been browsing all morning, researching Dr.'s in the Dallas area, what to expect, etc. I haven't been banded but I'm seriously considering it. I'm curious about the adhesion thing. I had gall bladder surgery in 2000 and a subsequent surgery in 2003 to repair the hernia created from the gall bladder surgery (herniated where they pull the gall bladder out of the belly button). The hernia patch and the adhesions from both surgeries have hurt ever since - I've been told that it's all normal - even had an ultrasound of the belly area.

I'm 212 @ 5'3" with an apron an excess weight. I really want to lose weight. After reading the posts I'm wondering, did any one else get to this jumping off the diving board point and think - well- maybe I could constrict myself and try imposing liquid Proteins on myself...but then the old other voice of reason pipes up and says - whatta ya mean?? you've been working on this for a couple of decades and ya still haven't lost - just take the leap - one more surgery - this one to prevent additional problems like type II diabetes, bum knees, etc.

45 minute to 4 hour procedure??? Adhesions....OK y'all - tell me if I jump I won't regret it!!!

I did the same thing. Is this right? Can I do it? Will I ever be able to eat normally again?

Even after the longer surgery, this was less painfull than my last. And the results will be great. I thought the same thing, why not just eat/drink liquids and all the weight will go away. Just knowing that the liquid part is temporary makes it easier to tolerate.

As for the adhesions part, 5 years ago i was in an accident which resulted in 5 broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, bruised kidney, punctured lung and tons of internal bleeding. Then I went back to work too soon and tore the incision, which goes from the top of my chest to below the belly button open. Thats what caused my surgery to be so lengthy. I would gladly do it again just for the chance to get down to norml weight. So far, since 8/30 I have already dropped 24 lbs and still going strong.

Good luck with your choice....Dave:bounce::bounce:

I was expecting a somewhat longer surgery due to my size, but Dr. Hansen said that thanks to pre-op diet liver shrinkage it went smoothly and I was only under for 60 minutes.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
