Gastric sleeve and heartburn

Recommended Posts

I am getting a band to sleeve revision next month and I was wondering if anyone still gets heartburn after their sleeve operation. My friend that was sleeved last December says that she sometimes wakes up literally choking because of the stomach acids coming up at night. Does this happen to anyone? What causes it and how do I prevent it? Thanks

Hearburn/reflux is a very well-documented side effect of sleeve surgery, whether you are having a revision from lap band or this is a first bariatric procedure.

If you have a hiatal hernia, see if your surgeon can repair it during your sleeve surgery. This is a very common cause of GERD and having it repaired can make a huge difference. I had occasional GERD prior to my sleeve surgery, my surgeon fixed it during my sleeve surgery and no GERD since.

Many sleevers take a PPI such as omeprazole or Protonix for several months after surgery -- talk to your surgeon about this.

If you already have GERD and it is not caused by a hernia or some other repairable deformity, then gastric bypass may be something you want to consider. Sleeve surgeries can cause or worsen GERD but bypass cures it something like 98% of the time.

Would like to revise from band to sleeve but am concerned about this reflux issue. Even before having the band I had issues with acid reflux. I have it well under control now by taking omeprazol daily, but am concerned that with the sleeve the omeprazol won't be effective. Has anyone been ableto control their reflux succesfully by taking a ppi after VSG? Thnaks!

I take omeperozole and I also use diluted apple cider vinegar, baking soda and alkta seltzer chewables. All the relief is only temporary and it's depressing the pain I'm in literally but don't let anyone discourage you because everyones body is completely different. Im just saying out of the 4 years post op last year it got the most intense when i got pregnant and had a miscarriage and has never been the same since. Upper GI. nov 8th can't wait for a solution alot of people don't understand those are the ones I've had to dismiss out of my life .

FDClerical. Thanks so much for your answer. So sorry to read of recent sadness. The reflux issue seems to be a bit of a crap shoot as to whether you will be affected by it or not. A lot to think about. Good luck with your upper GI, I hope that you find a solution and some relief.

Im 7 months out from sleeve surgery, and I still take oneprazol daily, it's been affective. When I tried to stop taking it around month 3 I had really bad heartburn, they said maybe around 9 months or so to try again to stop taking it... Sometimes I wake up with the acid in my throat thing but it's usually after I've drank coffee around bed time...

My new surgeon says I have Twisted sleeve slightly up top and massive heartburn. Upper g.i. Showed my sleeve to be very large and Fluid coming back up but luckily not all the way into the esophagus. Mental.eval on the 17th then submitting for approval for revision vsg to bypass. Nervous but ready to be our of this pain !!!

. What a nightmare for you, what does your VSG surgeon have to say about this? I certainly hope that all turns out well for you. The very best of luck going forward.

I am a band to vsg revision 2 years ago. The acid remains to the point I take 40mg nexium daily and still have break through. Dr has told me recently that I may have to revise to rny to fix the problem. He also told me that he no longer revises band to sleeve only band to bypass because of the acid issue. Good luck.

A band to sleeve revision will not help with acid reflux. The repair before sleeve will not work either.I had Revision from sleeve to bypass because of acid reflux and hiatal hernia repair failure. The bypass is the only thing that eliminates the reflux.

I had my surgery on Nov.22nd and home recovering. They did fix hiatal repair again also.so far so good.Have to go through phases of diet again.Still on Phase 2.

He's in Connecticut and I live in south Florida now so I'm restarting brand new with a different team and they are so amazing and supportive providing so many resources already totally different experience. Surgery is Dec 27th !

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
