Don't feel the limitations that I believe I should.

Hello all,

I'm about two months post op. Had band removed in June, ate like it was going out of style for two months until my VSG in August. Following the first few weeks of liquids, soft foods etc I found that I can eat and tolerate everything. Everything to the point that unless it's really bulky food like steak, I'm not really full. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of this surgery? I thought that I would be eating like a bird. I am so concerned that old habits never die. My cravings are still there and I think this is quite a problem. I know, therapy, therapy, therapy. Any other ideas?

A sleeve (no pun intended) of ritz crackers with cottage cheese, cream cheese etc. I figured I would be stuffed after just a few. Considerably more than I anticipated.

Crackers are slider foods. Some foods just slide right through your new stomach. Most are junky foods... crackers... I found I needed to train myself to stick with the recommended portions. Yea I could eat more, but program said 1/2cup at most, so that's what I do. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Remember, high Protein foods first, eat slow, correct portions, wait 30min after you eat to drink, and lots of Water. It will fall into place. Trust the program.

Crackers are "slider" food for many. Think about it this way -- if you put two cups of crackers in a blender and grind them up, you'll end up with about 1/2 cup of crumbs. If you put two cups of dense Protein in a blender and grind it up, you'll have close to two cups of goo.

Crackers aren't ideal. You need to eat Protein first, then veggies. You will feel your capacity a lot sooner.

I think you need to relax and stop worrying. Some people lose a lot of weight right away and some don't. Your stomach is still healing. You need to get a grip on yourself. If you stretch out your stomach because of overeating you could pull the staple seam loose and cause it to leak. You can actually die from this. It might take you awhile to get into a comfortable routine. Measure all your food now. Later when you are a pro you will be able to eyeball it. The first time you feel the pain from overeating will wake you up. Its not like the band at all with restriction. I'm almost 3 years post-op now. My meals are pretty small, about the same size portions as a toddler child. Try drinking more liquids. I loved vegetable beef broth and chicken noodle Soup broth. Right now you're still healing. Once you start working out and being active you will burn more calories than you can eat, I'm sure. You need to always be sipping on liquids.

Really...not to be mean but it should expect common sense that crackers and cream cheese is junk food...the fact that needs would be eating this suggest that they see the surgery as a solution not a tool. Respectfully change your eating habits or gain weight..that simple..you may have waisted your time and money.....

Also, nobody seemed to mention that you are a band to sleeve revision. From what I've seen, I think capacity is a bit more and weight loss is a bit slower? (someone who is a band to sleeve revision correct me if I'm wrong).

But LipstickLady said it best, Protein will keep you satisfied and fuller longer, so stick with that. Number one rule of WLS, Protein first. Then veggie, THEN starches only if you have room. Even Snacks should be protein rich, especially early out. I know it's hard, but don't count on restriction alone. Measure and weigh your portions and stop when done. It's a good habit to get into until you can eyeball it a couple years out.

Your opinion does not make it TRUTH. I am the last one on this board to "enable", trust me. I am also the last person to be "offended" by the words of a stranger on an internet forum.

;)

Telling someone they WILL gain weight and that they have "waisted" (wasted BTW) their time and money is a bit over the top, IMO. You might be right, but really, that's your opinion not FACT.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
