Not eating and drinking simultaneously, this is a hurtle!

Man oh man did I not realize how hard this is possibly going to be! Lol!

So I got home from the hospital on Tuesday and I've been all good so far except some gas discomfort.

Today my blood sugar is a little bit lower (not low or bad, I just want to keep it there) so I wanted to have some of the Healthwise oatmeal that still meets all liquid diet requirements. I made it really runny because I don't want it thick. But every time I take a bite I then want to take a sip of Water.

I think I know the reason is they don't want to us to fill up, right? However, my whole life always taken a bite and then taken a sip. So I find myself craving water more and more with every bite. How hard and fast is this don't drink and eat rule? I

Lol! It's funny the weird habits when discovers during this process.

It is a weird concept to adjust to - the separating of eating and drinking. All our lives up to this point, you have a drink with your meal. That's what you know.

I will say that now at 4 months post op - not drinking with eating has become second nature. So you do adjust to it. THe only annoying bit is restaurants because even when you say you don't want a beverage, they still bring you a glass of Water. Which I just leave sitting on the table untouched. But it's there and can be tempting - I know some people ask the waitstaff to remove it.

For your specific issue right now - you might want to put a call into your nutritionist. If really thin oatmeal is counting as a full liquid - you may not need to separate or at least not wait the full 30 minutes. But only your nutritionist can answer that. And it is a good idea to start practicing the separation times anyway. Hang in there - it does indeed get easier.

Off topic, but they bring you that glass of Water to show that you are being taken care of and served. I understand it may be irritating, but in a restaurant with a great staff, you'd probably get asked 45 times by 45 people (exaggeration) before your meal came if you had been served and if you would like anything. It also keeps your server from getting their rear chewed out for letting a guest sit for a long time unserved. It's a silent marker in the industry.

If you just got out the hospital, everything you are having is liquids, so you can "eat" and drink all you want. You need all the fluids you can get.

When you start eating dense Protein, you won't have room for liquids, and the first time you do it and get overly full you will never take a chance on it again.

It isn't as hard as you think.

LittleLizzie, it isn't that the Water helps fill you up, it is that it helps the food slide on down too easily. Then all of a sudden you realize you are in pain because you overrate. I drink all day, so when eating I do not have liquids near me. It is too easy to grab and sip without thinking. Three years since surgery, it still makes a lot of difference if I take a sip while eating, or eat without chewing well and slowly. Thank goodness! The food is so much better and enjoyable!

And to the other poster about how all Im taking in now is liquid...lol! I totally forgot that it is considered liquid. But you are right that it's good I practice now.

Thanks everyone! I so excited with how well I'm feeling this many days out. Just don't want to overdo it or screwup.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
