Sleeping after bypass

Recommended Posts

I had my gastric bypass surgery on Monday, September 26th. I was discharged the next evening on Tuesday. So far everything is going really good, haven't had any major problems, I'm holding down the little soft foods that I'm eating. Not really doing much exercise other than walking, until I see my surgeon on the 20th.

My biggest complaint is sleeping. I'm having very minimal pain at one of the incisions which causes me to have to sleep on my back and I don't sleep on my back. I can't even lie on either side without it hurting. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so how long will it be before I can turn from side to side, is this something I need to be overly concerned about?

I'm glad recovery is going pretty well. I think the discomfort will go away within another week or two. (Just from the time it takes to heal.)

I'm not a stomach sleeper, so I can't help with any advice on that. I can tell you that when lying on my side I put pillows under my torso/tummy and that helped.

Good luck!

I did that too, and I found that if I "spooned" a big body pillow with it tucked underneath my tummy and my legs wrapped around it, this really helped with the discomfort... I'm definitely not a back-sleeper either!

I don't think you will like this but...I was always a stomach sleeper up until my RNY and then last year my Panni I have adjusted to sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
