Why no soda and very frustrated!

Recommended Posts

Why are we not suppose to have carbination? I got banded in December and drink a can of pop prolly 4 times a week and I feel fine with it. The only thing I can remember is that my dietician said that the gas bubbles would feel me up and that's not the case at all. I didn't know what everyone else was told?

Also frustrated because I went in last month and had to have my last fill removed because I couldn't keep anything down. They took me back down to my previous fill and I have gained 2 pounds!! I have been working out more this month than any other, but I really don't think it's muscle because my pants that use to be really baggy and just kinda baggy now. It's been almost 9 months and I have only lost 25 pounds. It is so frustrating!

You are not supposed to have sodas because it can expand your pouch. Just because you aren't feeling any problems from it, doesn't mean there aren't any. I've given up sodas and I'm still in pre-band.

My doctor told me that the gas in sodas enlarges your pouch. Pre Op I was drinking about 5-6 sodas a day. Since my surgery on July 28th I haven't drank one. I did not go through all that pain and expense to make my stomach bigger.

I have to commend my husband who had his band put in July 11th. He used to drink up to 14 cans of diet coke a day (preband) and when he found out that he couldn't have any soda after the band he quit cold turkey, and he lost 8 lbs right away. Just by quitting the sodas. I have been told that the carbonation will stretch your pouch and didn't we have this surgery to help us in all ways to lose weight. I can say that I did not have this surgery to only kind of lose weight, but to make an all out effort to lose this weight. Only advice I can give is to follow your doctors, and nutritionist advice. After all they are the "experts". Good Luck on your journey, hope all turns out well for you.

Kaohinani.....I was like your husband a TRUE Diet Coke addict! I quit cold turkey too! And I must say I STILL miss them! But I'm scared to death of stretching my pouch so it's all worth it!

Here is something else to think about. Yes the carbonation expands the pouch. BUT the regular sodas is empty calories and the additives in the diet kind have been recently shown to mess with your insulin levels and will make you hungrier. Not something I need.

PLUS the stuff that colas are made with corodes the teeth. AND can make you dehydrated.

Too many negitives. I havent been banded yet and I gave it up cold turkey. It is hard sometimes but I think I am worth it.

Different doctors have different opinions on drinking soda (Or any other carbonated beverage, like beer).

Some doctors believe that the gas pressure could cause the small stomach created by the band to enlarge, some doctors do not believe this is possible.

One consideration is that if the beverage is not a diet beverage, those calories must be counted.

I know that drinking soda is very uncomfortable for me.

You might want to ask yourself these questions and see if you can discover the reasons in the answers:

  • How many calories per day are you eating?

    2. How many times per day are you eating?

    3. Do you snack?

    4. Do you drink with meals?

    5. Do you graze?

    6. Do you drink non-diet beverages?

    7. How many grams of Protein do you eat daily?

    8. Are you eating any junk food at all?

    9. How much volume of food are you eating at one time? (In cups of food)

10. How many minutes per day are you exercising?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
