When you get stuck.....

Recommended Posts

is it in your upper chest, or down closer in your stomach where your port is?

I'm just curious. I'm starting my journey and as crazy as it sounds, I'm VERY claustrophobic but not in the traditional sense. If I was "stuck" and had that feeling the food couldn't go down I think I would have an anxiety attack.

So, where does it feel stuck? How long does that last? Is there anything you can do to break it up or get it down?

Thanks,

Marieze

Well, the food either goes down or doesn't!! And if it does and gets stuck it just hurts bad and you know better for next time, it hurts in the upper chest area...the best way I can describe it is the feeling you get when you eat too fast, you know what I mean? It's not all that bad, doesn't feel like you're choking or anything, just a bit uncomfortable. One of those 'Doh!' moments at least for me!

I had the same fear and talked to my surgeon about it. I honestly worried that being "stuck" would feel the same as choking, which I wasn't cool with. But, no...it happens lower. You can breathe just fine during a stuck moment. For me, I just feel intense pressure in my upper chest but my body lets me know what it needs to do to fix the problem. Either it fixes it itself and the food passes or it says...get me to a bathroom because this puppy isn't going anywhere but up! It's not vomiting either...for me it's just like open mouth and the culprit makes it way back out. Gross, I know. But, the good thing is that the food is not yet digested so there's no acid involved and once it's out you typically feel like a million bucks again! Don't sweat it...that was one of the things I worried about most and now it's nothing I concern myself with!

The only thing that I've had feel like it was stuck was a capsule I take for bp. When it happened it didn't feel like it was caught in my throat exactly...just there somewhere...wierd. Anyway, it just kind of 'floated' back up so I just drank some more Water and floated that sucker right back down! LOL!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
