List of Q's for surgeon?

Recommended Posts

My pre-op is tomorrow!!! I'm so excited. Can't believe I made it this far. I've done a ton of research and lurked on this forum for months, so I feel prepared. But of course I have a list of questions to ask tomorrow. Want to know if I'm forgetting anything?! I'll list mine if you list yours!

-What Bougie size will you use?

-What do you do to protect from leaks?

-Do you have any concerns about my birth control?

-If your wife was my weight, would you be confident enough in this procedure and your ability to preform on her? (They have 3 very young children, as do I have young ones. Of course his wife is darling though!)

I'd ask...

How long will I be out of work (if you work) or how long will I be not allowed to do certain activities?

Do they have a pre-op diet - if so - what is it?

What are the tests they order before surgery?

Do they have you take blood thinners (pre-op or post-op)?

Good luck!

Kristen

I asked about:

-Catheters, some surgeons require them, some don't.

-Blood thinners

-Sex

-How to take my medications ( some people have to crush them or cut the pills, I was able to take as normal)

I asked so many questions, and still do, I think they hate when I call them haha.

In the beginning I asked: Size of bougie, do they remove the fundus completely, can I add ground flaxseed to my shakes (been doing that for years for fiber), how long do I stay in hospital, can you give me nausea controlled meds before i wake up, pre and post op diet calorie and carb goals, what will be my MTV (maximum tolerated volume) of my stomach after surgery, the drinking Water rule with Protein shakes... Too name a few o.O hehe

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
