Anyone been this sick?

Recommended Posts

Hi y'all! I am 8 weeks post op and cannot get any relief!! I threw up everything including Water so I was severely dehydrated and malnourished, had an ulcer and a stricture, I just got out of the hospital for the 3rd time and this time I was there almost a week due to complications from my surgery. I had to have a picc line inserted in my arm so that I can "eat" through TPN. I am starting to feel better but now my Dr wants me to start trying to eat and literally EVERYTHING still makes me sick!! I am so sad and frustrated, I can't even describe what I've been through these last 8 weeks, oh and by the way the TPN made me gain back all the weight I'd lost so I'm really feeling like I did this all for nothing! I'm just looking for someone who might have been through this, and want to know how long it took you to feel semi "normal?? I really regret ever having this surgery and would not wish this on my worst enemy!

I hope you mend soon. Ulcer and strictures can be a bad experience.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So the primary focus should be on meeting these three requirements.

When I look at the information on the internet it says:

Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present.

Therefore there are three points here since you have an ulcer. Do not take NSAIDs like aspirin. Use a proton pump inhibitor such as Omeprazole (Prilosec). And third, make sure you were tested to verify that you do not have , H pylori infection. My surgeon prescribe Omeprazole for the first year. This was not to treat acid reflux but rather to allow the stomach to heal properly.

I had some problems but nowhere as severe as yours. It took me 6 months before I reached my happy state when most of the problems dissolved away.

Hello so sorry you feeling this way. I had gastric bypass in Decemeber 2015. A month later had a bowel obstruction and been dilated 3 times and may require a major 3rd Surgury. I also have a picc line and been on it since July 7, 2016. I get TPN every evening after work for 12 hours. I haven't been able to keep food down and I vomit a lot. I do have few days I am ok but it's not easy. My advice to you is to please chew chew chew your food and early slowly. You will get better. Don't give up. I been hospitalize 6 times since December and it's been stressful but being positive will help you. It's normal for you to regret the Surgury because I also felt the same way but trust me you did the right thing. This is temporary. You will get better. Try to avoid meats and corn and high Fiber food , salads for now. Stay on soft foods, Protein Shakes, oatmeal, yogurt, carnation instant Breakfast, chicken , cooked vegetables, Soups. This is what I was told by the nutritionist. You Amy want to see one also. If you need any other suggestions or have questions, please feel free to ask.

Thank you! That's good to know that someone knows what I am going through. I too have been hospitalized several times, and now I'm showing signs of liver damage from the TPN. I don't know what to do.. They want to ween me off of it to protect my liver, and my line has already been blocked ,but I still am unable to get anything down except apple juice and I obviously can't live off of that alone. It's just so frustrating.. Non stop problems since I woke up from surgery.

Hello Summertime,

I have had many of the same issues and unfortunately have done all the above treatments and have avoided all that would contribute to stomach ulcers and they refuse to go away. I have been malnourished from day one and have made all the dietary adjustments that both my Bypass Surgeon and his team have suggested, as well as the Gastroenterologist. Unfortunately but hopefully, my nightmares will soon cease, as my physician is going to contact my insurance company to see if we can proceed with a bypass reversal. Everyone on these sites to me are very precious with offering their support and advice, but only you know your body. Some have advise don't give up but there comes a time when you have to listen to your body and decide this may or may not have been the right move to begin with and take steps to rectify if possible. I am 1 year and a little over 4 months into this and have already lost 20 pounds past my goal weight and am still losing. I exist tired, malnourished, nauseated and in pain from the ulcers everyday of my life. At this point I am simply existing not living as was the great plan in the beginning.

Some have said hey you will gain your weight back if you have a reversal but as we all know the bypass is simply a tool and reversal or not I could gain the weight back. At this time I just need a life that is worth living and without pain so please listen to your body and your physicians and hopefully you will get help and out of the misery.

Summertime,

I will add that at 8 weeks you will need to try and get past the first 6 months at least and listen to your physicians as a lot can change in the first 6 months. I thought I was doing okay as the weight feel off so rapidly and then realized something else was wrong which led to the first surgery in October and then another surgery in Feb this year with a bowel revision. Over 15K into this even with insurance and cannot continue the financial strain.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
