Too early to worry?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone-had GBS on 9/14, everything went great & I'm healing nicely. I couldn't be more relieved or grateful as I know many others have had to struggle with complications right from the start. At the risk of sounding "whiney" - I am a bit worried though. I have been able to tolerate all full fluids and am planning on starting puréed soon. My worry is that I not getting this "full" feeling I was counting on as part of our great tool in the initial stage. Obviously I know it's up to me to make the right life style changes etc but I was really counting on having this new boundary to help me through the initial stages as a prompt/reminder....I of course have let my imagination and anxiety run wild that the surgery didn't actually work for me and that I will feel no physical differences as I start to change phases. Thanks for listening, just worried now that I won't have the limitations that I know I will need [emoji26] Anyone else experience this? Is this "normal" in the first few weeks? Thanks again!

Your stomach has just been cut on, and the nerves were also cut.

It's very hard to feel 'full' when the nerves can't send the signals to your brain.

Give it time, and always ALWAYS measure and only eat what your doc suggests (or even less).

Once your stomach has had time to heal, and you start on more dense foods, you'll feel the full feeling again. Although, the feeling I feel now is different than what I used to feel when I was full - it's much more unpleasant. I eat much less than what my doctor allows because of it. I don't like the full feeling I get now.

I'm in the same boat. I just had my surgery on 9/12 and I just tried out some fresh pineapple to help me get some fluids because I haven't been able to tolerate many and, thinking I'd get this overwhelming full feeling, never really stopped eating and almost finished the entire container (about 7 medium size pieces). That would make me full BEFORE the surgery but all I got now was an uncomfortable feeling in my chest...nothing close to a full feeling though. If that's what the full feeling is, I'm screwed!!!

Unfortunately, at 3 months out I seldom feel full. I do measure everything and I will say that even though I often feel like I could eat more, ten minutes later I'm not thinking about food.

I had surgery on 9/13 and your story is exactly like mine.

I had absolutely no pain after surgery. None. I have not felt nausea or had any problems taking in fluids or Protein.

Makes me worried that maybe my surgery wasn't done properly. Most people talk about pain and not being able to eat....

Needless to say, I've only lost 7 pounds in my first post op week and I'm freaking out.

*only* lost 7 lbs? A 7 lbs loss the first week is fantastic! Many people are actually *up* a few lbs the first week because of all the IV fluids that were pumped into them at the hospital (it's just Water and is gone within a few days)

I know we all hear the stories about people dropping 30 lbs the first month, but that's on the extreme end of the range. I've been on WLS boards for 2 or 3 years, and it seems most people lose in the 15-25 lb range that first month (some more, some less). So your 7 lbs in one week is actually very good!

P.S. I had no pain, either. Just sore abs that made it challenging to go from lying to sitting - or sitting to standing. But if I was just lying (or sitting), I had no pain at all.

Thanks cat woman. The scale hasn't moved in 3 days and I keep telling myself not to weigh myself, but I can't help it. I think that's what's causing my worries...but I need to sit back and let my body heal and stop worrying.

just stick to your program and let it do its magic! I had occasional stalls and slow periods all along - include a two-week long stall that first month. But I've lost over 200 lbs since I began my journey...

I had very similar issues. Three weeks out I can eat less than five days out. It'll come. Like someone said....measure! It'll stop you from harming your pouch.

200 pounds! That's crazy! Congrats!

I keep reading horror stories of people being post op by over a year and saying they only lost 30 pounds...the fear is real because I think maybe that's going to be me, lol.

This forum helps! Thanks for your encouragement!

I had the same fears as you. No pain, no nausea. I started to think they did something wrong and then I talked to two other people that said they felt the same way at first. They have gone on to lose a lot of weight! I had RNY 8/23. Down 18 pounds since surgery. It freaks me out if I start comparing myself to others . I need to remind myself that this is about me and it's my journey. It will be different than anyone else's . I LOVE reading all the success stories though! Goals to look forward to

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
