Post Surgery Bloodwork - BUN Bld & ALT are above normal range? Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I had wonderful results with my post surgery blood work - my glucose was much lower as were all the cholesterol readings! I have to wait nearly a week to see my doctor again. I'm a little anxious that the BUN Bld and ALT results are high. Is this normal for bariatric patients? Just curious. I started googling to see what this meant and these readings have something to do with your kidneys and liver. I'm not even sure if I have been tested for this before.

From what I understand, your BUN will go up when you begin eating a high pr otein diet.

I am not a doctor, however.

@@AmiLou The ALT can be high if there's any muscle damage. If you are breaking down muscle for Protein (rather than getting enough with food) - this may be the reason for the high numbers. Your BUN can be high from too much Protein or dehydration. I would assume that you've had these tests many times - including pre-op.

I can't find the link to the studies right now, but there has been evidence of liver panel results (including ALT) initially increasing before then decreasing with rapid weight loss for women. Men don't typically see the increase and go straight to lowering of the liver panel results. If these are your first round of results, I wouldn't be too concerned just yet - your body is going through major changes so not surprising that some things may be a little out of whack, the important thing will be to continue to get blood work tested on time to see if it is a trend or not. Your doctor will be able to assess better, a slight elevation usually isn't cause for worry anyhow.

My liver enzymes (which include ALT) were high-ish the day I had surgery. I was in heavy ketosis from the liquid diet and pretty dehydrated because my surgery was at 5pm and I'd been fasting since 11pm the night before (unnecessarily long in my opinion). At my first post-surgery blood draw (and all since then) my liver numbers have been just fine. I do find now that I'm sleeved if I eat too much Protein, almost no carbs and not enough fat, then I get itchy (which is a sign that I'm throwing liver enzymes again). If I keep my macros to high fat, low carb, moderate Protein, I feel the best. BEST WISHES a you get this sorted out! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
