Parkinson's Disease and WLS

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I was talking to a friend of mine about my sleeve surgery and how well I am doing. He has an obese wife with Parkinson's Disease. Over the last year she has gotten even bigger (now 300) due to her increased lack of mobility. He had asked the Dr about the bypass surgery and they said no due to the fact that she has to take so many meds for the Parkinson's Disease. I asked him about the sleeve and he said he didn't know about it.

So I told him I would ask here.

Has anyone with Parkinson's Disease had or know of anyone who has had the sleeve surgery? Are you able to take all the meds needed and how is the weight loss going?

My friend is still moving his wife from the chair to the toilet and into the van. He said it is getting more difficult as he is almost 70 years old and as she is getting bigger he is losing and getting weaker. They do have someone 4 days a week for bathing but no help for when they go to the Dr or out to shop or the theatre.

Thanks for any replies, or suggestions.

Knowing PD drugs I would suspect that sleeve is same issue not to mention other complications due to her disease progression.

It would be very helpful for him to consult a nutritionist and PT for his wife as her lack of mobility could be helped with some physical therapy (as well as her pd symptoms). But nutritonist intervention is probably most needed as her diet seems a likely issue for concern -- also there are dietary issues that surround the PD drugs and disease that they may not be managing.

I wonder how her appetite would be affected by the sleeve as the condition worsens?

my father in law died of parkinsons last year and honestly the last 8 years or so he was increasingly malnourished despite our best attempts because of swallowing issues and just not wanting food. I can't see a doctor approving this kind of surgery unless the Parkinson's was very early.

Thank you both for your replies I have sent your replies to my friend and will let him follow up. I must say I was a bit surprised when he said his wife was now 300 pounds as I too thought issues of not eating would have set in by now. She has had the disease for at least 5 years that know of.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
