How many times a day should you eat?

Recommended Posts

@@juneau My surgeon and team suggest 3 meals and 2 Snacks in between as needed. They suggest 90grams Protein a day for female, 60 for males. You need the Protein to be successful. Also, recommended to wait 30 minutes between eating and drinking which I have found works well for me. I too had problems in beginning trying to figure out how to get enough fluids in. Also not to rely on protein shakes, just occasionally. They prefer getting your nutrients from whole foods as much as possible. Good luck to you!

I was told to wait 20 minutes before drinking after eating, but usually have to wait closer to 40. Eating AFTER drinking isn't going to stretch your stomach or make you eat more food or anything like that, it's just uncomfortable, because your stomach is still full of food. You need to wait for the food to pass through your stomach to make room for liquids to move through. That's just trial and error until you figure out how long to safely wait. For me, if I eat until my sleeve is "full" it usually takes 30-40 minutes before I can comfortably drink.

If what you are "eating" is liquid or liquidy (protein shake, Soup, yogurt, chili, etc.) then you won't have to wait as long, because that stuff passes through your stomach quickly.

I do not wait when drinking Protein.

on a 5 to 6 times a day seating schedule and have no problem getting my 80+ grams of Protein. And make sure to make use of an app like My Fitness pal. It really helps to keep track of things.

One more question - do you wait an hour to drink Water after a protein shake? I feel like there is so little time you can drink if you eat more than 3 times/day

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and advice! I'm glad my doctor's office isn't the only ones that advise just 3 meals a day. I'm definitely still on a steep learning curve.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
