YOGA-I am a beginner any advice

Recommended Posts

I am about 3 months out of RNY and I would really like to try yoga. I heard there is a yoga class that focuses on stress and anxiety. I suffer from more stress n anxiety than ever after my surgery. I am still on Clear liquids mostly Water so I need some help mentally with that. Any advise for a beginner?

Well, go sign yourself up and try it. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. After surgery, my body was constantly changing and I had to adapt. This meant a lot of experimentation.

I lost my ability to swallow medium to large size pills. Therefore I had to split or crush them. My ability to swallow returned after about 2 months.

I became lactose intolerant. Therefore I couldn't drink milk. This problem disappeared after about 2 months.

Some people describe life after surgery as a journey. And in any journey, there is change after change and experimentation is the key. New joys and new problems around every corner. Find your way along this journey. Learn the best way you can adapt.

Why are you still on Clear Liquids after 3 months? I found that solid foods (steak and chicken for example) were difficult to eat, so I relied on softer foods (such as chili and soups). I put a few recipes for home made high Protein chili and Soups at the end of the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Yoga is a wonderful way to increase flexibility and it's super relaxing. I go to a smaller studio but it doesnt matter as long as you like the atmosphere and the teacher. Definitely speak to any teacher prior to class about your physical limitations. You don't necessarily have to tell them you had bariatric surgery, unless you want to, but do tell them that your a beginner and any problem areas. Example: when I first started I had really bad neck pain. The teacher showed me specific stretches and the pain disappeared. Also any good yoga teacher can show you modified poses that accomodate your particular level of flexibility. It's funny but I'm very flexible despute being over 200lbs. Meanwhile my 115lbs sister is as flexible as a board. She came to yoga with me and loved it eventhough she couldn't do all the moves as well as me. ????

Yoga is something I've wanted to try for quite some time. One of the local studios is doing a Yoga for Beginners Workshop tomorrow morning. I don't know...I feel like I would be more comfortable if I could go with someone rather than doing it alone, but seeing as how I've done just about everything in life on my own not sure why it's such a hangup for me. :P

Yoga can be wonderful. Definitely get the on from the doc if you are still on clear liquids. Typically when the instructor knows someone is a newbie they can be really helpful. Almost every instructor I've had has always been really helpful with offering suggestions for modifications to poses. Way to get out there!

I am a Yoga beginner myself. But since I don't want to go out alone, I do yoga videos for beginners (YouTube) in the comfort of my living room. So far so good. Since I'm at goal, I need to tone and tighten. AND my sister-in-law reminded me, that at our age, we need the strength and the balance. hehe

My advice? Sign up for the class!

Yoga is on my wish list. I know it can be adapted to any physical level, but part of me wants to wait until I can get down and up off the floor.

I do some yoga stretches in the pool, though.

I'm ready too. I found a beginning class at the YMCA on Saturdays. I will start next week. Surgery was 8/3. I asked my doc when I can strength train or try yoga and his PA said this week as I start eating solid foods. I think my healing rate is faster as I had to... went back to work the week after surgery. I'm sharing because the connection between solid foods and increased exercise may be important.

Lmao. I face-planted several times over the first 4-5 yoga classes. Then I realized I did NOT have to do it like everyone else- and modified- until I could master more. Yoga is key to my sanity, oh, and my flexibility too!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
