Low Bmi (31.7) with no cormobidities. Help

Recommended Posts

I am in search of USA surgeons performing gastric sleeve with low Bmi w/no cormobidities . I am 59 yrs old and will only see metabolism get slower. I am miserable and willing to self pay since I don't qualify for insurance coverage. Please send me your recommendations or comments on what to do next other than gaining more weight!

I'm in Texas. BMI was 30 and no problem finding a surgeon. I am 64 and sleeved 8/15/16. Good luck.

Did either of you self pay? Currently I do not have any other health issues and my Bmi is less than 35. So, I need to find a dr who will perform the gastric sleeve without the FDA requirements.

Dr Borland in New Iberia, Louisiana should be on your list to check out. His pricing is very reasonable. I am driving 3 1/2 hours to go to him but even if I had to fly, it would be totally worth it.

As long as you are 30 pounds overweight he will consider you for the surgery. I have a BMI of 31.5 and will be a Self Pay.

My BMI was 31 and I consulted with surgeons willing to perform the VSG for me in Southern California, but they were in the $29,000 to $35,000 price range. I have PCOS but that didn't qualify for me any form of insurance coverage. After considerable research and thought I decided to go to Mexico and have the surgery with Dr. Fernando Garcia. I had a fantastic, hassle-free experience and no complications. It was $4200. The endocrinologist who recommended VSG to me to help with PCOS agreed in advance to provide follow-up care for me.

I had been hesitant to go to Mexico at first, but ultimately decided that it was the most feasible choice for me. I'm one year out to the day, have met my goal weight, and have no regrets. I would definitely look into going to a reputable surgeon in Mexico if you cannot find one in the US who is willing to perform the VSG at a cost you can afford.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
