Sick of clear liquid diet, rather eat nothing.

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 days post-op. I've complied with my Clear liquids and now I can't stand them. The idea of drinking broth or eating another popsicle turns my stomach, and I think yesterday was the last day for the SF Jello. I called my doctor's office to see if I could have a Protein Drink or possibly pureed Soup. They asked if I was feeling weak and suggested that I drink SF Gatorade/POWERade (barf) but no to my request. I decided to drink coconut Water (100%, no sugar or flavors) instead.

So serious question has anyone just decided not to eat?

My follow up is Thursday and assuming all goes well I'll be allowed "soft food" apparently skipping the puree altogether, so looking forward to that.

I know there's this argument that the facility imposes this for a reason but this is a blanket protocol applied to everyone and I did not have co-morbidities or pre-diabetes. I'm just plain ole fat.

Thanks for reading my long venting post.

I hit 8 weeks post-op tomorrow...I'm thankful clear liquids is in my rearview mirror!

I felt kind of the same way you did right before I could start having things to chew, and all I can say is to keep drinking those fluids. I went about 8 hours one day with nothing and it was the stupidest thing I've done since my surgery. AND, when you're not allowed much to 'eat' and have virtually no capacity, it takes a long time to catch up from that kind of stupidity. Just my .02, about MY experience.

One question, are you doing any Protein? When I was on clear liquids, I was expected to drink Isopure fruit flavored Protein drinks or something of that sort. They aren't great tasting but they did the trick and kept my energy up so that I could walk every day.

Good luck and congratulations on getting through your surgery!

Even when I was on Clear Liquids I could have Protein shakes. I had a Protein shake in the hospital.

So you aren't having any Protein at all and are justing living off Water and air? Is that right?!!?!?

I, too, grew weary of lliquids but I forced myself to soldier through it. To make matters worse, I am a savory person, not much of a sweets eater, so all the shaakes and pudddings and yogurts and Popsicles... URP!!!

My saving grace was the soop aisle at Fresh Market. There are blended soops like Butternut Squash, Black Bean, Tomato Bisque, Portabella Mushroom... They come in a carton and were absolutely delicious. I added a little unflavored proteen and sipped on them at "meal time".

I still choked down my Premiere, but the Soups were fabulous as I was on liquids for almost a month post-op.

EDIT: YES, I CAN SPELL. I HATE IT WHEN ALL MY WORDS HYPERLINK. ARGH!!!!!!

Yeah NO Protein Drinks at all. I asked today and was flatly refused. I've been keeping up with my liquids fine.

No nutrients other than what's in the broth would have me in VERY BAD HUMOR :) I'm sorry you're stuck with such a severe set of guidelines...there's no wiggle room at all in your printed post-op dietary instructions? Just seems kind of harsh :(

Even if you don't feel like it, you have got to get in your Protein.

Have you tried any clear Protein supplements: Isopure, ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates, Syntrax nectar or similar? Protein is critical for healing.

No I called the office and was told no.

It's just until Thursday which is my follow up and I'm hoping for food.

I'd like to have her doc go almost 10 days with nothing but sf sport drinks, broth and water!

Good for you for sticking with your surgeon's recommendations...you're clearly strong-willed and committed, so you should kick ass at this whole weight loss thing!

I hope I'm following my post surgery diet correctly???

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner: 4oz skim milk w/ Protein shake!!

Clear liquids: sugar free ice pops, herbal tea, Water w/ crystal lite...

Is anyone else following this? We should be having Protein correct?

each practice has a different plan. I was only on Clear liquids in the hospital and there wasn't any protein. when I got home it was full liquids and there were protein options.

Gotcha. Same for me. My tray consisted of broth, tea, sf lemon ice, and sf Jello in the hospital. Once I was home, the same, but Protein shakes 3 times daily.

I'm only on day 4 post surgery...already getting anxious to lose and I'm not even healed yet!! Lol I still have some upper chest pressure (gas). Hoping that goes away soon. Just wondering when I can expect the scale to move. Lol

Thanks for your response

You should definitely be consuming protein. What is your protein target? Protein is critical for healing and weight loss.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
